Roberta Joan Johnston

Roberta Joan Johnston, 63, of Canton IL, who was a pillar of her community, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family at 6:03 PM on Monday, October 21, 2024 after a short battle with cancer.


Roberta was born on March 1, 1961, in Springfield, IL. She was the daughter of Robert and Shirley (DeGroot) Smith. Roberta was preceded in death by her parents. She was raised by her father at a young age and step-father, Edgar Manz Seward in Canton, IL.


Roberta attended Canton High School and later went on to work as a receptionist at 5th Avenue Tires and clothing boutique where she became everyone’s favorite retail associate. Roberta was of the Catholic faith, and a member of the Elks Lodge. Roberta loved her pets, and her karaoke.


Surviving Roberta are her three children; Robbie (Christy) Cozadd, Melissa ( her favorite son-in-law, Mark) Sence, and Hollie Myers, 9 grandchildren; Britney and Seth Cozadd, Jarred and Hannah Harney, Sunshine and Marcus Sence, Austin (Kelsey) Jones, Kyle Trent, and Jalen Lindsey; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Ronald Smith, along with his two daughters, Jennie Hedrick and Kathleen Gasparovich, whom were by Roberta’s side until the end, as well as her brothers, Tim Seward and Terry Seward; many beloved nieces and nephews, along with several bonus sisters, bonus daughters, and not to forget the “damn” dog Poppy and “fat ass” cat Nova. Roberta is preceded death by her parents, her step-dad and siblings, Kelly Smith, and Jeaneen Hardy; her sister and best friend who's been patiently waiting for Roberta's arrival on the other side. A special thanks to Willow Ridge Hospice for taking phenomenal care of Roberta; Halie, Amy, Sandy, and Megan were exceptional, as well as the care they always provided.


A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the Canton Elks Lodge in Canton, IL from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Please bring a side dish or dessert, and join us in the celebration of Roberta’s life. She was the only favorite aunt to many and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Memorials may be made to the family.
