Donald Lee Bennett


Canton – Donald Lee Bennett, 70, of Canton, passed away at 12:50 PM on September 24, 2016 at Heartland Health Care in Canton. He was born on January 21, 1946 in Canton to William Leroy and Mary Jane (Wolf) Bennett.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and step-father that raised him, Sammy Glass.

Surviving are seven children, Michael Bennett of Canton, Dawn Morris of Canton, Angelina Bennett of AR, Josette Bennett of MO, Donna Bennett of N.C., Donald Lee Bennett Jr. of OK, and Rachel Marie Bennett of OK; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanette (Todd) Brinkley of Canton; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and girlfriend of nine years, Donnette Macalaster.

Don started working for TBMW Railroad, and then worked for Hitchcocks Scrap Yard, after that he worked for McCoy’s Roofing for many years. Before getting sick, he helped his friend Jack Russell at Russells Auto Body. Don attended the Salvation Army in Canton. Don was a coon hunter, trapper, and really loved fishing and the outdoors. He was a scrapper for many years until the good Lord took him home. Don was loved by his cat, Baby, and his dogs, Princess and Angel.

Services will be at 11 AM on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 N. Main St., Canton, IL, where a visitation will be from 10-11 AM. Tony Long will officiate. James E. Hughes Jr., 53, of Sumner, formerly of St. David, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville, IL.

Richard G. Wilson


Lewistown- Richard G. Wilson, 88, of Peoria and formerly of Lewistown passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at his son Richard (Virginia) Wilson’s home.

Richard was born on July 23, 1928 in Enion, IL to Ernest Wilson and Mary (Derry) Wilson. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He worked for Western Electric as an electrician.

Richard is survived by sons, Mark Wilson, Edward Wilson, Richard (Virginia) Wilson, Daniel (Cheri) Wilson, Ernest (Bonnie) Wilson, Todd (LaSonia) Wilson, Kurt (Mary) Wilson, Chad Wilson, and by daughters, Mary (Tony) LeGree, Christine (Ken) Baker, Dana Wilson and Leslie (Taylor) Wren, 23 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert Wilson, and one sister, Wanda Ford, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, 3 sisters and one daughter, Kathy Zafranovich.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside services and interment will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown with Reverend Garland Criswell officiating. A military service will be conducted by the Lewistown VFW Post 5001 and the Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Constance G. Dowell

Canton – Constance G. Dowell, 84, of Canton passed away at 6:38 am Monday, September 26, 2016 at Renaissance Health Care Center in Canton.  She was born on July 6, 1932 in Peoria to Albert and Charity (Logsdon) Ebbing.  Constance married Robert W. Dowell on February 11, 1951.  He preceded her in death on September 30, 2010.  Also preceding her in death were her parents, three sons; Alan Dowell, Scott Dowell, and Kelly Dowell, and one brother Alan Ebbing.
Surviving are two daughters, Vicki (Glen) Phillips of Canton, and Sherrie (Gary) Guehler of The Colony, TX, fifteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Constance loved fishing, reading, and doing puzzles.

Eileen V. Madison

Eileen V. (Evans) Madison, age 99 of Chetek, Wisconsin passed away Monday, September 26, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care of Chetek.  She was born April 11, 1917 in Canton, Illinois the daughter of Earl and Nina (Rohrer) Everts.
Eileen is survived by her 3 grandsons; Daniel (Susan) Schrodt, Tim (Gina) Schrodt, Robert Bowlin, 3 great grandchildren, nephew Jack (Joy) Thompson, 3 step children; Rodney (Kathy) Madison, Dennis (Yvonne) Madison, Annette (Mike) Messner, 9 step grandchildren, 21 step great grandchildren, 1 step great great grandchild, many other relatives and friends.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands; Forest James Evans and Freeman Madison and 3 daughters.

James “Jim” R. Lewis


CANTON- James “Jim” R. Lewis, 51, of Canton (Breeds) passed away at 3:02 PM on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was born on June 24, 1965, a son of Amos Auburn and Pasty Ann Grubb Lewis Jr. He married the love of his life Peggy Smith on May 26, 1990 in Farmington. She survives.
Also surviving are his two sons, Garritt A. Lewis, Jarred J. Lewis both at home; one brother, David (Amber) Lewis of Peoria Heights; three sisters, Keetra (James) Freeman of Missouri; Tina (Hank) Duffield of Glasford, and Janice (Tim) Stobaugh of Elmwood; his in–laws, Gary and Evelyn Smith of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim worked as a programmer for North Country Business Products in Peoria for over 20 years. He was an avid Houston Astros and Houston Texans fan and most dear to his heart was his family.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 North Main Street, Canton, where visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. William A. Marlow


William A. Marlow, 55, of Rushville, passed away at 11:02 pm on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rushville. He was born on October 30, 1960 in Galesburg, the son of William and Gale (Hendricks) Marlow.

Survivors include his daughter, Camie (and Kevin) Marlow of Sand Springs, OK, 2 grandchildren: Dee and Shaylee Johnson, father, William Marlow of Altona, 2 sisters, Melanie (and Roylee) Rhinberger of Summum and Vicky (and Tony) McCombs of Rushville, 2 brothers, Jack Marlow of Southern Illinois and Ricky Marlow of Sapulpa and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Gale Marlow.

William worked at Pepsi Cola Company and Iron Cross Automotive in Tulsa, OK. He also worked at Aero Wrecking in Sand Springs, OK.

Sandra “Sandy” Jett


Macomb – Sandra “Sandy” Jett, 68, of Macomb, passed away at 8:40 PM on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Heartland Healthcare Center in Macomb, IL. She was born on February 22, 1948 in Canton to Donald Dean and Ardis (Ward) Jett. She married Jimmie Gray in May of 1967 in Blandinsville, IL. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jimmie (Jan) Gray of Rushville, IL, and Michael (Beth) Gray of Macomb, IL; eight grandchildren, D. Tyler Gray, Tanner Otto Gray, Travis Dean Gray, Brianna S. Gray, Kylin Marie Gray, Paige Jolyn Gray, Dilan Michael Gray, and Malaki Shane Gray; and one brother, Gary (Norma) Jett of Canton.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and three brothers, Bill, Steve, and Mike Jett.

Sandy worked as a bartender. She was a member of the Macomb American Legion.

Andrew “Andy” E. Almasi


Andrew “Andy” E. Almasi, 72, of Farmington, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 23, 2016. Andy was born to Beatrice (Balagna) and Joseph Almasi on November 11, 1943, in Canton, IL. Andy met his wife, Linda Reynolds (Barrett), and they married in 1970.
He leaves his wife, Linda, of 45 years; his son Joe (Lori) Almasi; son Don (Christy) Barrett; daughter Angi (Jean Kueter) Almasi; daughter Jenny (Tom) Hall; grandchildren Mallory, Paige, Heath, Taylor, Rane, Nick, Brady, Jordan, John Rylee, Kent and Lily Carsyn.
He is preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Bob Jacobus; and sister, Linda (Larry) Taff.
Andy was a man who loved to work.  In his early years, he worked at International Harvester (Navistar) and Len’s Yamaha.  He later worked for the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Association of Quincy.  Andy returned to work for Navistar where he retired in 2000.  After retirement, he worked for Peterson Farms.
Throughout his life, Andy was active in his community where he was President of Skilled Trades Local 1145; Exalted Ruler of the Canton Elks Club; head of the Canton United Way; and member of the UAW CAP Council.
An avid fisherman, Andy enjoyed vacationing with Linda, their family and their dogs (Sassy, Snickers, and Brandy) in northern Minnesota.  He also enjoyed golfing and bowling with his friends.  A special thank you goes out  to OSF Hospice.

Sara Logan

Canton – Sara O. Logan, 76, of Canton passed away at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at her home.
She was born November 23, 1939, in Burtonview, IL to John J. and Elizabeth (Lawhead) Wiggers.  She married Lynn Logan in June of 1966, in Fulton County.  He preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by two children, Amy Logan of Chagrin Falls, OH and Susan (Joe) Marino of Chesterland, OH; one sister, Natalie Riecks; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Marino.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Wiggers; and one sister, Joy Furkin.
Sara had worked as a PMR at the Post Office in Kingston Mines.  She enjoyed dancing and reading, and loved animals.  She volunteered her time with the Spoon River Literacy Program, where she was awarded for her contributions to the program.  She was also active in the St. David PTA.
She attended Shield’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the United Methodist Women’s Group. 
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 30, 2016, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m.  Burial will be at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Wilma E. Cape


St. David – Wilma E. Cape, 91, of St. David passed away at 7:48 pm Friday, September 23, 2016 at Graham Hospital in Canton.  She was born on January, 5, 1925 in Fiatt to John and Nora (Morey) Newburn.  Wilma married Donald Cape on June 19, 1943 in Missouri.  He preceded her in death along with one sister, one half-sister, one grandson, one great-grandson, and Thomas Sawyer her companion for over 44 years.  Surviving is three sons; Ronald L. (Kelly) Cape of St. David, David A. (Debbie) Cape of Canton, and Steve (Debra Kohl) Cape of Canton, eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Wilma was a member of the United Methodist Church of St. David.
Services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be one hour prior to services.  Burial will follow in Maryville Cemetery in Bryant.  Memorials can be made to the St. David Optimist Club for the Methodist Church.

Larry D. Bedwell

Lewistown – Larry D. Bedwell, 77, of Lewistown, passed away at 6:00 AM on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Timbercreek Rehab & Healthcare Center in Pekin, IL. He was born on December 7, 1938 in Canton to John and Bertha (Kruschinsky) Bedwell.

Surviving is one daughter, Laura A. Bedwell of Peoria, two grandsons, Trevor and Trey; and three sisters, Violet (Walter) Sweet of Pekin, Beverly Westerfield of St. David, and Virginia Bennett of MI.

Preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Larry worked as a laborer in the Union. He served in the Army from September 1961 to 1965.

Betty J. Clagett


Betty June Clagett, age 93 of Garland, TX, formerly of Astoria, IL, passed away at 2:35 pm on Friday, September 16, 2016 at Avalon Memory Care, Garland, TX. She was born on December 17, 1922 in Astoria, IL, the daughter of Frank and Alys (Lannery) Hughes.

Betty was a certified nursing assistant. She was a lifetime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where she was a former board member. She also was a member of the United Methodist Church of Garland, TX

Betty is survived by two sons, Thomas (and Ronna) Beemer of Rowlett, TX and Ron (and Valerie) Beemer of Mesa, AZ, two daughters, Cheryl (and Warren) Bagley of Montague, CA and Barbara (and Steven) Pauley of Sachse, TX, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Wynette Johnson of Canton, IL.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Clagett, two sons, Gary Livengood and Dennis Livengood, one brother Franklyn Hughes, and five sisters, Ruth Stremmel, Wilma Jones, Lois Edwards, Geraldine France, and Norma Powell.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 21st at 11:00 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Reverend Robert Green will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Josephine Ellen Smith


East Peoria – Josephine Ellen Smith, 93, of East Peoria, passed away at 5:09 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Farmington County Manor. She was born on March 17, 1923 in Frederick, IL to Joseph Fisher and Alice (Cole) Fisher-Ren. She married Laston L. Smith on March 21, 1942 in Missouri. He preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, and four sisters.

Surviving are three children, Patricia (David) Churchill of Dripping Springs, TX, Ruthie (Steven) Schnetzler of Farmington, IL, and Shirley (William) Pierce of Bartonville, IL; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Henry, John, and William Ren.

Josephine was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in East Peoria, IL.

Diana Sue Grigsby


BRYANT- Diana Sue “Nonnie” Grigsby, 65, of Bryant, passed away at 6:35 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Graham Hospital. She was born on July 19, 1951 in Denver, Colorado, a daughter of Burl and Donita (Sutter) Goins. She married Carl Grigsby on November 2, 1984 in Lewistown. He survives.

Also surviving are her children, Jason Hertel of Nashville, TN; Audrey (Chris) Carlin of Bryant; RaeAnne Hertel of Peoria, ten grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob, Rebekah, Hunter, Lorre, Lucas, Sawyer, Peyton, Thomas and Emerson; one brother, Edward (Donna) Goins of Hillsboro, Indiana; two sisters, Beverly (Gary) Johnson of Roanoke; Rose (Miles) Thurm of Hillsboro, Indiana, and two nephews and one niece. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Kisses.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Frank Goins, and two granddaughters, Alexandria and Gwyneth Kruzan.

Diana worked as a CNA for several years in the Fulton and Peoria County area, she enjoyed camping, fishing, and shooting with her family.

Per Diana’s request there will be no services. Cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 North Main St., Canton. Lavonne Vaughn


Canton – E. Lavonne Vaughn was born at home on April 11, 1929, in Western Rural Canton to Charles and Violet (Spangler) Fulton.  They preceded her in death.
She led a blessed life and was surrounded by her husband of almost 70 years, all three of her children, and all six of her grandchildren when God called her home on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
She married Dale Vaughn on February 22, 1947, at the Shield’s Chapel Parsonage.  He survives.  Also surviving are her children, Larry (Ruth) Vaughn, Debra (David) Cape, and Karen (Kenny) VanHouten; and sister, Maxine Goyen, all of Canton.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Michele (Scotty) Blanchard of Louisiana, Jennifer (Glen) Williams of Cuba, Christopher Vaughn, Kenny (Cortney) VanHouten, Keeli (Kyle) Lindmark, and Kayla (Chad) Buchen, all of Canton; and eleven great-grandchildren, Bryce, Zane, Maddex, Vaughn, Whitney, Addyson, Kash, Corinne, Kallen, Kasen, and Eva.
She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Eric Cape; and her two brothers, Leslie and Gordon Fulton.
Lavonne went to grade school in Monterey and graduated from Canton High School in 1946.  She was always a hard worker, both in her personal life and her church life.  She babysat and worked in a dairy during high school and helped farm with her husband up until her death.  She was an active and faithful member of Shield’s Chapel Church and the United Methodist Women, where serving the shut-ins had a special place in her heart.
She loved gardening, visiting with friends, and lunch with the girls, but her true love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m.  Burial will be at Shield’s Chapel Cemetery.

Martha Sepich


Canton–Martha Sepich, 63, of Canton, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at her residence.
She was born on October 4, 1952, in Canton, to Merle and Dorothy (Davis) Reneau.  They preceded her in death.
She married Steven Sepich on December 23, 1970 in St. David.  He survives.
Also surviving are two children, Trisha (Chuck) Shubert of Canton, Jill (Jayson) Herrick of Lewistown, four brothers, Harry (Linda) Reneau of Groveland, Mark (Marla) Reneau of Canton, Warren (Kim) Reneau of Lafayette IN, Gary (Julie) Reneau of Washington, IL and four grandchildren, Sydney, Saydey and Nicholas Shubert and Drake Herrick.
She was also preceded in death by one sister Judy Lawrence.
Martha worked as a case worker for the Canton Township and was a member of Shields Chapel Church. She was also an avid Bears fan.
Most of all she enjoyed being at her grandkids sporting events and activities.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016, from 11 am until 1 pm, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.  A funeral service will follow at 1 pm at the funeral home.
Burial will be at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Sam Lingenfelter


Canton – Sam Lingenfelter, 91, of Canton, passed away at 2:07 AM on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Red Oaks Estate. He was born on August 18, 1925 in Canton to Sheldon and Ruth (Ashby) Lingenfelter. He married Alta Beebe, she preceded him in death.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, and six sisters.
Surviving are three children, Patti Lingenfelter of Winter Haven, FL, Dan Lingenfelter of Bunker, MO, and Denise Harrington of Canton, IL; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Donna and Wilma.
Sam retired from working at International Harvester 47 years ago, where he was the UAW President. He worked as an Auxiliary Officer for the Canton Police Department. He was a member of Eastside Church of Nazarene in Canton, the Illinois Sherriff’s Association, AM Vets, American Legion, and the Moose Club.
Sam served in the US Navy.

Robert Kirk


Robert A. Kirk, 91, of Canton, passed away at 12:43 PM on Thursday, August 4, 2016, the anniversary date to his beloved wife, Irma, at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton. He was born on May 9, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Dwight and Ruth A. (Brannan) Kirk. He married Irma R. Whitmore on August 4, 1951 in Creve Coeur, IL. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2007. Also preceding him in death were his parents, and one son, Allen Kirk.
Surviving is one son, Dean Kirk of Peoria; one daughter, Deborah Kirk of Greeley, Colorado; one daughter-in-law, Diane Kirk of Des Moines, Iowa, and two grandchildren, Sarah and Adam Kirk.
Robert worked for Caterpillar in Peoria from March of 1951 until retiring in 1985; he was a member of First Christian Church in Canton, and he served his country as a Pilot for the United States Navy during World War II. Robert enjoyed Community Theater, was an avid golfer and loved to read.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 North Main St, Canton, where a memorial visitation will be one hour before the service. Jane Nappin


Lewistown- Emma Jane Nappin, 75, of Lewistown, passed away at 3:07 AM Monday September 12, 2016 at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She was born April 19, 1941 at Canton, the daughter of Don and Jeanette (Angelo) Welker. She married James E. Nappin on December 21, 1962 at Lewistown. He survives with two children, Jon Nappin of Lewistown, and Crystal (Lennie) Ulm of London Mills, four grandchildren, Kylie Jane Logue, Jenny Armijo, Jessica Jennings, and Jaime Jennings, four great grandchildren, one brother, Norman (Virginia) Welker of Macomb, and one sister in law, Sandy Welker of Lewistown. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Beth Ann Jennings, one brother, Gene Welker, and one grandson.

Jane had worked for State Farm Insurance in Illinois and Florida. She was a member of the Lewistown United Methodist Church, and was an avid gardener.

Pauline Shaw


Canton–Pauline P. Shaw, of Canton, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the Graham Hospital, just 12 days short of her 100th birthday.
She was born on September 19, 1916, in Adair to George E. and Stella P. (Upson) Derry. They preceded her in death.
She married Jack “B.W.” Shaw on May 7, 1938, in Manchester, IA. He preceded her in death on November 4, 2002.
Surviving is her daughter Sharon Lee Shaw of Canton and grandson Dustin Shaw.
Also preceding her in death are her son, John Shaw, brother Paul Derry and sisters, Dorothy Shores and Jo Anne Nayden.
She worked at the overall factory, Newberry’s Dime Store and was a past member of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at 11 am, at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton. There will be no visitation.

Brenda M. Shaffer


Canton – Brenda M. Shaffer, 76, of Canton, passed away at 12:14 PM on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Graham Hospital. She was born on May 17, 1940 in Canton to Everett and Bernetta (Cushman) Hitchcock. She married Charles Shaffer; he preceded her in death in May of 1987.
Also preceding her in death are her parents and one sister, Ann Baker.
Surviving are three children, Tracy (Aaron) Anderson of St. David, Dave Shaw of Canton, and Kellie Harmon of FL; five grandchildren, Aaron Michael Anderson of Canton, Alyssa Hobbs of FL, Deena Anderson of St. David, Heather Shaw of Farmington, and Charles Jacob (CJ) Shaw of Canton; three great-grandchildren, Hanna Anderson-Davis, Grady Anderson, and Avery Anderson all of Canton; and two brothers, Ed Hitchcock of AR and Dave Hitchcock of Peoria.
Brenda owned and operated three restaurants in Lewistown, Fiatt, and Girard, IL; she also worked as the manager of the cafeteria at Spoon River College where she retired in 2003. She was a member of Episcopal Church in Lewistown, IL. Brenda was an avid Cardinals fan, loved gardening, cooking, and traveling with her lifelong friend Martha Reiter from Washington.

Tom Zahner


Canton – Howard P. “Tom” Zahner, 91, of Canton passed away at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Heartland Healthcare Center in Canton.
He was born January 18, 1925, in Peoria to Theodore and Hattie Zahner. He married Juanita Faye Fawcett in 1951, in Missouri. She preceded him in death on February 13, 1996.
He is survived by four children, Tammi (Tom) Cammack of IA, Brick Zahner of Chillicothe, Brett Zahner of Chillicothe, and Jody (Andrew) Duncan of TX; and one granddaughter, Kimberly Duncan of TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rocky Zahner; two brothers, Ted and Robert “Bob”; and two sisters, Jeanette and Myrtle.
Tom was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a carpenter in the Peoria area, working in residential construction. He enjoyed working around his house and tinkering with his truck. He loved the outdoors and managed Giant Goose Ranch for many years.

Charlotte E. Montgomery


Charlotte E. Montgomery, 92, of Canton, passed away at 3:40 PM on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Graham Hospital. She was born on January 20, 1924 in Canton, a daughter of Sam and Ocea Eyerly. She married the love of her life George M. “Monk” Montgomery on June 14, 1942 in Canton. He preceded her in death on August 30, 2016. Also preceding her in death are her parents.

Surviving are three children, Gary (Cindy) Montgomery of Canton; Janice (Scott) Krey of Farmington, and Stacy (Steve) Lee of Canton; eight grandchildren, Darla, Todd, Jeff, Kari, Missy, Jenny, Dillon, and Drew; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, T.J., Mason, Hannah, and Bailey; one sister, Maxine Kovacevich of Canton.

Charlotte worked for Keller’s Big Value in Canton for many years. She was the longest living member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton. She was a member of the Canton High School Choir which placed in pinnacle, and she loved to attended craft shows.

Graveside services will be at 9:00 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Ethel Mae Blackburn

Fort Myers – Ethel Mae Blackburn, 95, of Fort Myers, FL. Formerly of Canton passed away at 9:00 am Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Joanne’s House of Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, FL.  She was born on August 7, 1921 in Trenton, MO. to Jacob Karl and Cora B. (Miller) Thompson.  Ethel married Ferrol D. Blackburn on July 5, 1942 in Trenton, MO.  He preceded her in death on September 7, 1998.  Also preceding her in death were her parents, and one brother Leon Blackburn.  Surviving is one son Gerry F. Blackburn of Estero, FL. and grandson Zane Blackburn of Golden, CO.
Ethel and her husband owned and operated Ferrol Shoe Store in Canton for 38 years, retiring in December of 1985.

Shirley J. Varnes Dallefeld


Canton – Shirley J. Varnes Dallefeld, 82, of Canton passed away at 8:50 am Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton.  She was born on June 9, 1934 in Peoria, IL. to Walter and Mildred (Peplow) Wiesehan.  Shirley married Earl Eugene Varnes on December 22, 1953 in Farmington.  She later married Junior Dallefeld on August 1, 2009 in Canton and he also preceded her in death on July 4, 2016.   Surviving are her four children; Michael Varnes of Elmwood, Richard (Janet) Varnes of Peoria, Denise (Sean) Pasieka of Canada, Connie (Curt) Green of St. David, one sister Betty Ashbaugh of Texas, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother Paul Wiesehan and one sister Joyce Auchterberg.
Shirley was of the Lutheran faith.

Gail A. Mathis


Norris - Gail A. Mathis, 81, of Norris, passed away at 11:01 PM on September 6, 2016 at Graham Hospital Emergency Room in Canton surrounded by his family. He was born on May 25, 1935 in Walnut Grove, IL to Dayle and Irma A. (Hollister) Mathis. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Auld on September 8, 1962 in Canton. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Gregory (Sara); Donald and Jon Mathis all of Canton; and one brother, Marvin Mathis of Pawnee, IL.
His parents preceded him in death.
Gail served in the Navy from 1953-1956 and then moved on to serve in the Air Force in 1956, where he retired on May 31, 1974 as Master Sergeant. He worked for Davidson of Louisiana as a Salesman, owned and operated a service station in Fairview, IL, worked for Evangelical Free Church as a missionary to the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire) from 1988-1994, and lastly he worked for Evangelical Free Church of Canton as maintenance and grounds keeper, where he retired in December of 2015.
Services will be at 11 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 N. Main St., Canton, IL, where a visitation will be held from 10-11 AM. Rev. Roger Raymond


Roger L. Raymond, age 75 of Ipava, IL, passed away at 5:03 pm on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria, IL. He was born on December 27, 1940 in Virginia, IL, the son of Lee and Geraldine (Coplan) Raymond. He married Helen B. Decker on October 29, 1961 in Literberry, IL.

Roger was a tractor mechanic, working for Bedwell Farm Equipment in Bushnell for many years. He then was owner and operator of Ipava Tractor Repair in Ipava.

He is survived by two sons, Bruce (and Cathy) Raymond of Plainfield, IN and Richard Raymond of Indianapolis, IN, two daughters, Joanne Pontifex of Burlington, IA and Cathy (and Steve) Ellis of Plainfield, IN, 4 grandchildren; Bryson (and Sydney Hardy) Ellis, Drew Pontifex, Jessica Raymond, and Ashton Ellis, 1 great-granddaughter Vivian Ellis, his sister Jean Hager of Virginia, IL, and his special friend Pam Smith of Ipava.

He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sons, Jeffrey and Christopher Raymond.

Roger was a member of the Vermont Antique Tractor Club and the Ipava American legion.

Services will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at 11:00 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Doug Krukewitt will officiate. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior to the services on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia, IL. Memorials may be made to the Ipava American Legion.

Mark Clayberg


Cuba-  Cuba- Mark Eugene Clayberg, 64, of Sharpsburg, Georgia and formerly of Cuba, went to be with the Lord at 2:32 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia.

He was born April 6, 1952 in Canton, Illinois, the son of Byrl and Lena Mae Clayberg. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ron Clayberg. Survivors include his daughter Andrea Clayberg Steele (Luke) of Peachtree City, Georgia; two grandsons, Preston Daniel Steele and Mark Conrad Steele; his former wife, Cora Sue Clayberg of Crossville, Tennessee; his sister Delores (Dee) Weaver of Punta Gorda, Florida; and his brother James (Jim) Clayberg of Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Mark graduated from Cuba High School in 1970. Upon graduating, he worked for Illinois Bell. In 1984, he and his family moved to Gainesville, Georgia where he began his career in the printing business. He retired in 2015 from Quad Graphics in Atlanta, Georgia. Mark moved to Sharpsburg, Georgia in January 2016 and enjoyed the rest of his life as a loving and devoted father and grandfather who will be deeply missed. He was a member of the Ipava Chapter No. 226 O.E.S., the Cuba Masonic Lodge #0534, and Peoria Scottish Rite.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 4 at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba with Reverend Mike Arnett officiating. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery at Cuba. Monterey – Bonnie Lynn VanHouten, 73, of Monterey passed away at 12:01 p.m. Friday, September, 2, 2016, at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria.
She was born September 22, 1942, in Canton to Kenneth and Vyrna (Stringer) Muntz.  They preceded her in death.
Bonnie married Thomas M. VanHouten on October 10, in Palmyra, MO and October 19, 1959, in Canton.
Surviving are five children, Tommy (Carolyn) VanHouten of Spring Lake, Tracy (Dennis Wagner) VanHouten of Canton, Julie (Edward) Hedges of Canton, Kelly (Mitch) Stobaugh of Canton, and Jared (Andrea Brush) VanHouten of Elmwood; two sisters, Judy (Vern) Henderson of Canton and Susie (Gaylen) Westerfield of Milan; twelve grandchildren, Sara, TJ, Becky, Jeff, Brittany, Ashley, Chase, Ayrianna, Cole, Austin, Adam, and Allison; and two great-grandchildren, Stella and Madison.
Bonnie was employed by International Harvester.

Martin “Monk” Montgomery


Canton – Martin “Monk” Montgomery, 94, of Canton, passed away at 9:10 PM on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Graham Hospital. He was born on September 12, 1921 in Iowa to Wilbur M. and Belle Montgomery. He married the love of his life Charlotte Eyerly on June 14, 1942 in Canton, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Gary (Cindy) Montgomery of Canton, Janice (Scott) Krey of Farmington, and Stacy (Steve) Lee of Canton; eight grandchildren, Darla, Todd, Jeff, Kari, Missy, Jenny, Dillon, and Drew; and six great-grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, T.J., Mason, Hannah, and Bailey.

Preceding him in death are his parents, and four sisters.

Martin worked for Army Surplus Montgomery’s, Montgomery’s Outdoor Sporting Goods, Senn’s Dairy, manager at Canton Daily Ledger Circulation, Swearinger Wholesale, and as a carrier for The United States Postal Service where he retired from on October 3, 1986 in Canton. He wrote an outdoor article for the Canton Daily Ledger, coached in Little League. He played center for the first Canton undefeated Football Team in 1938. Martin loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and looking for mushrooms. He was a happy St. Louis Cardinals fan but not so happy when they would lose.

Martin was a WWII veteran serving in the Army.
