Wilbur Gene Carlton

Wilbur Gene Carlton passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Harmony Manor Nursing Home after surviving 44 years on borrowed time, thanks to the care and expertise of innumerable members of the medical community and the advancements of medical technology. The eldest of four children, he was born Aug. 1, 1931 in Norris, Illinois to Ellis Costello Carlton and Wilda Wendolyn (Vance) Carlton. He graduated from Canton High School, Canton, Illinois in 1949. He then received his Bachelor’s degree August 1954 from Illinois State Normal Teachers College, now Illinois State University of Normal, Illinois. He received his Master’s degree in Music Education in May of 1964 from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. In November of 1951 he married his first wife, Beverly Ann McKinney. They were blessed with three daughters: Vickie Lynn, Julie Marie, and Lynn Ann. His first music teaching position was with the Elementary and High School Districts in Cornell, Illinois. The family was greatly amused when a local newspaper reported that he had been hired by Cornell University. After four years with the Cornell School District, he took a position with Astoria School District in Astoria, Illinois where he remained for 18 years. In 1975, he accepted a teaching position with Lander County School District in Battle Mountain, Nevada. It was there in March 1977 that a doctor detected an impending heart block and sent him to Reno for an emergency pacemaker implant, the first of many over the next 44 years. Recognizing the need for a less time-demanding teaching position, he accepted an elementary school music position with Humboldt County School District in 1980 and it was there in Winnemucca, Nevada that he finished his teaching career at Sonoma Heights Elementary School in 1996. In January 1982, he married his second wife, Sibyl Karen Butcher. In retirement, he spent the next 16 years as a full time volunteer assisting her with her high school library position at Lowry High School until her retirement in 2011. Wilbur worked tirelessly at his job and expected his students to do likewise, yet he felt it equally important for them to enjoy music while learning. He recognized his students’ interest in computers and utilized that interest to further their music education. He derived great satisfaction from parental comments regarding how much their children had learned in music classes and how much they liked music classes.

Wilbur felt that the social aspects of music education were as important as the technical. With that concept in mind, he organized the first Tri-county Northern Nevada Massed Band Festival in Battle Mountain, Nevada, performing first during the school year of 1977. This was based on the Fulton County, Illinois annual massed band festivals held at Canton High School that he had attended four years as a student at CHS and later eighteen years as band director of Astoria High School of the same county. All band students from Pershing County, Humboldt County, and Lander County Schools participated under the direction of a guest conductor. Unfortunately, Wilbur missed his first festival due to heart surgery. Later, following his move in positions, ca. early 1980s, he was the guest director for the festival when it was held in Winnemucca. Wilbur also took much satisfaction from the number of students who followed him into a music teacher career or music industry career. They approximate 8 in number and include Illinois students Larry Little, Mike Little, Jody (Lindsey) Worthington, Kerry Welker, and Stan Johnson, as well as Nevada students Jose Flores, Forrest Madewell, and Kelly Dugger. Additional music participation included singing in the Winnemucca Civic Chorus, the Swinging Seniors, and Methodist Church choir. He developed an interest in photography after taking classes from optometrist Dallas Lighthouse in Winnemucca. Copying family photographs led to an interest in genealogy, which introduced him to family that he never knew he had. This led to an accumulation of more family photographs, and more family, and more family history.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Sibyl Karen (Butcher) Carlton; his former wife, Beverly Ann (McKinney) Carlton, and their daughters, Julie Marie Pickel and Lynn Ann Carlton; two grand-daughters, Jessica (Jose) Rivera and Kira (Russell) Owen; two great grand-daughters, Jazmyne and Lena Headley; and fourteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Vicki Lynn Carlton, an infant brother Gary Ralph Carlton, and twin siblings Ellis Dale Carlton and Alice Ione (Carlton) Forrest.

Services will not be held due to the corona virus pandemic. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery in Canton, Illinois. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the United Methodist Church of Astoria, Illinois or Winnemucca, Nevada. Photograph by Third Eye Photography

Norman Thomas Welker

Norman Thomas Welker, age 82 of Macomb, IL, passed away Friday, March 12, 2021 at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on October 15, 1938 in Canton, IL, the son of Don and Jeanette (Angelo) Welker. On July 18, 1959, Norman married Virginia Kingery at the First Christian Church in Ipava, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are his two sons, Brian (and Sue) Welker of Naperville, IL and Bradley (and Dora) Welker of Sherman, IL, four grandchildren; Kyle (and Rachel Trent) Welker, Kailey (and Mike) Boland, Ashley Welker and Clayton Welker, his sister-in-law Sandra Welker of Lewistown, IL, his brother-in-law Jim Nappin of Lewistown, IL and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don “Gene” Welker and his sister Emma Jane Nappin.

Norman was a graduate of VIT High School in 1956. Following graduation, he joined the US Army where he learned the telephone trade. During his service, he spent two years in Japan where he was responsible for maintaining dial offices. During this time in Japan, he received three letters of Accommodation.

Following separation from the Army, he placed applications with several phone companies and a cooperative. He received a call from McDonough Telephone Cooperative’s (MTC) general manager requesting he come in for an interview. Norman was there on June 15th and at the conclusion of the interview the manager asked how soon he could start. He had to wait until the following day, June 16th, 1959 before he could start. He went on to spend his entire telephone career of 47 years working for MTC, the last 21 years as general manager and president.

Over the years, Norman was sought out by other regional small companies to help in restoring service or correcting problems with switching equipment. After becoming general manager, Norman was soon sought out to serve on various committees and board of director positions. One of the first boards that he served on was the Illinois Hearing Impaired program, which today is known as the ITAC program. He was a member of the Illinois Telephone Cooperative Advisory Council, Illinois Independent Telephone Company, Illinois Telephone Association, Service Management Corporation Board and National Telephone Cooperative Association (NTCA) Board. The crown jewel for Norman was to serve as President of the NTCA Board of Directors and receive the NTCA Life Achievement Award.

He was instrumental, along with other Telco leaders, with the creation of Western Illinois Network Service (WINS), providing Internet technology and later digital TV to homes throughout west central Illinois. MTC first introduced digital switching technology in the late 1990’s. Norman had a major responsibility in coordinating the project as MTC had to work with a number of companies that the Cooperative connected with, the largest being GTE Telephone. By the time he became general manager in 1984 many changes had occurred within the telephone industry. Federal and state agencies were demanding more services than the older digital switches could provide. This resulted in a complete replacement of the Cooperative’s digital switching equipment.

Just like the old equipment being retired, it was time for Norman to retire. His last day in the office was September 30, 2005. Upon retirement, Norman and Virginia loved to travel. Several of the trips were very memorable. For their 50th Wedding anniversary they did an Alaskan cruise, taking their children and grandchildren along. Later, they did a European tour including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. On the way home they made a stop in the United Kingdom. They traveled to Barcelona, Spain, spending a few days there before joining a Mediterranean cruise that covered a number of ports of call.

Norman and Virginia did several theater tours with WIU seeing many stage shows. There were several trips to NYC Broadway for shows and even one to London, England. Norman looked forward to the long weekends spent at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort which included a couple of nice dinners as well as theater. His “bucket list” was not complete-there was a train trip across Canada that he and Virginia had to take. They boarded the Rocky Mountaineer in Vancouver and ended the trip in Calgary and then home.

Norman was a member of the Macomb Elk’s Lodge 1009, serving as Exalted Ruler in 1983 and District Deputy GER in 1988, a member of the Macomb Masonic Lodge #17, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Springfield, ANSAR Shrine in Springfield, the Macomb American Legion Post #6, Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce where he was President in 2002, and was President of the National Telephone Cooperative Association from 2004-2005.

Services for Norman will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 11:00 am at the First Christian Church in Macomb, IL. Pastor Kelly Ingersoll will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 am the day of the service at the church. Interment will be in the Summum Cemetery in Summum, Illinois with Masonic services provided by the Macomb Masonic Lodge #17 and military rites provided by the Macomb American Legion Post #6. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the WIU Foundation for the Arts, c/o WIU Foundation, 1 University Circle, Macomb, IL 61455, or to Hematology Research at Mayo Clinic, c/o Mayo Clinic Dept. of Development, 200 1st Street SW, Rochester, MN, or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Chicago Unit, 2211 North Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707-3392.

At the age of 12, Wayman started working for Walter Hill at Atlas Shoe repair, unfortunately the shop caught fire so he went to work for Val Portwood running the projector at the Garden Theater. By the time he was 16 and able to drive, he parlayed his movie house experience into a road show business, hauling films, projectors, and a portable 25’ x 18’ screen in a Crossley station wagon to St. David, Norris, Trivoli, and Mapleton. After the show repair reopened, he went back there to work and at the age of 19 he bought it. While doing shoe repair and showing movies, he got into a fender bender. He fixed his car himself and was inspired to open his own auto body repair shop, Sap’s Autobody & Towing. Eventually that became his main focus. One year, in the late 70’s someone from International Harvester came to his shop and asked if he could paint some tool bars that needed an industrial finish. They liked it so much they came back again wondering if he could do some welding. It wasn’t long before he ended up with a whole new business, a welding shop called Sap’s Enterprise.

He was a member of South Park United Methodist Church and also was a boy scout leader.  Wayman served in the United States Army.
