He was born on September 27, 1945 in Canton to Joseph W. and Verna (Botts) Burkiett.
He married Edna Vanderpool on January 22, 1966 in Exeter, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Joseph E. (Annette) Burkiett of Fairview, Corinna (Christopher) Walters of Wee-Ma-Tuk, brothers, Dennis (Joyce) Burkiett of Fairview, Albert (Teresa) Burkiett of AR, Stephen (Margie) Burkiett of Fairview, Tom (Lydia) Burkiett of FL, Andrew Burkiett of Fairview, sister, Rachel (Scott) Yerly of Fairview, grandchildren, Joseph T., Tara, Alexis, Madison, Jace, great grandchild, Kassidy and great great grandchild, Fletcher and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Samuel and David and one grandson, Brandon Swise.
Joe worked for Midland Coal and was also a self-employed farmer throughout the Fairview area. He is the current Fairview Township Road Commissioner serving for over 30 years. He was a member of the Coal Creek Bible Church where he served as an Elder. He enjoyed mushrooming, fishing, and watching wildlife. Edna and Joe had a passion for traveling.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton at 3 pm. The Rev. Jacob Tourtillott will officiate. A visitation will be held from 1-3 pm at the funeral home on Sunday also.
A private burial of his ashes will be held at the Coal Creek Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Faith Bible Camp or to Coal Creek Bible Church.
