Gene was born March 25, 1937, in Brimfield, to John and Alma (Baker) Endres.
Gene married JoAnne Gutshall on November 28, 1959, at the Elmwood United Methodist Church. She survives.
Gene is also survived by four children, Sherry (Bryan) Swindler of Elmwood, Michelle (Don) Forrest of Elmwood, Dianna (Scott) Reicheneker of Washington, IL, and Lance Endres of Elmwood; one sister, Mary Lou Taylor; ten grandchildren, Danielle Hagen, Jennifer Donath, Ian Swinder, Derek Swindler, Chelsie Ingrassia, Haleigh Barlow, Collin Reicheneker, Quinn Endres, Andrew Endres, and Emma Endres; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John Endres, Tom Endres, Ralph Endres, and Lester Endres; one sister, Dolores Coulter; and one grandson, Cameron Reicheneker.
Gene was a carpenter and tradesman. He worked at ALCOA/Home Comfort for 16 years. He was a 50-year member of the local Masonic Lodge. Gene was an avid Cubs fan and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He enjoyed spending time at Rookie’s visiting with his friends and playing cards. Most recently, Gene taught his grandson, Andrew, how to play cards. Gene grew up on a farm and was an avid hunter of squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, and deer. He also enjoyed raising coon dogs, chickens, and rabbits.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood. A visitation will be held the same day one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
