Melvin Anton Hisey

Melvin Anton Hisey, 87, formerly of Cuba, IL died on October 2, 2023 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was born on June 10, 1936 to John and Evelyn (Wondrasch) Hisey in Chatfield, MN. He married Dora Slater on June 8, 1957 in Chatfield, MN. After 63 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on May 8, 2021. He was also preceded in death by grandson Christopher Flatt and sisters Marjorie Dorholt and Mildred Moe.

He is survived by his children- Brenda (Dennis) Derry of Cuba, Mel (Juli) Hisey of Tuckasegee, NC, Bill (Wendy) Hisey of Ellisville, Darlene (Michael) Davidson of Colorado Springs, CO, Cheryl (John Hardy) Lockard of Cuba, Mary (Mark) Wepprecht of Scottsdale, AZ and Tim (Peggy) Hisey of Riverview, FL, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson, 4 sisters- Millie Hisey, Marie Ragland, Marilyn Baker and Mavis (Gerald) Williams of MN, 5 brother/sister in laws- John Slater, James Cantrall, Paula Julien, Sandra Slater and Dixie ( George) Bruketta and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He attended Chatfield High School. He was a proud Army veteran having served overseas in the Korean War. He was a natural woodworking craftsman building furniture and homes. He owned Hisey and Sons Construction in Lewistown. After moving to Arizona, he continued to advance in his career as a superintendent and project manager for commercial construction companies.

His life dramatically changed when he suffered a massive stroke in December 1991. With hard work and therapy, he survived, but with great deficits in speech and mobility. He became known to many in his later life as Hot Dog (his most often used phrase) as he rode around on his scooter. He was of the Christian faith and accepted Jesus in his life through baptism. One of the highlights of his later years was going to Washington DC with other veterans to visit the many memorials with the Greater Peoria Honor Flight. He and Dora lived life to the fullest and traveled across the country in their motorhome and on many bus trips. He was a proud veteran and although his regular speech was limited, he could sing “God Bless America” word for word.

He was very proud of his family and loved them dearly.

Memorial services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton, IL on Saturday October 28, 2023 at 10 am with visitation one hour prior. Reverend Shalom Renner officiating. Burial of ashes and military rites will be accorded at Wiley Cemetery in Rural Ellisville after service. The family invites you to join them for a time of fellowship and sharing memories during lunch at Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton afterwards. Memorials may be made in memory of Melvin Hisey to The Greater Peoria Honor Flight. Funeral arrangements have been made through Sedgwick Funeral Home in Canton.
