Frederick “Fred” J. Harms

Canton- Frederick “Fred” J. Harms, 82, of Canton, passed away at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Graham Hospital in Canton. He was born on May 20, 1941 in Oelwein, Iowa, a son of Otto and Virginia (Eischeid) Harms. Fred married the love of his life, Nancy Gunn on June 8, 1968 in Canton. She survives along with Fred’s sister, Stephanie Smith of San Diego, California, his sister, Katherine “Kathy” Barnes of LeRoy, Illinois, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Elizabeth, and an older sister, Mary Peitersen.


Fred graduated from Canton Senior High School in 1959, and then continued his education, graduating from Western Illinois University with both Bachelor and Master Degrees. He began teaching at Canton Senior High School in the fall of 1965, where he stayed until his retirement in the late nineties. History was his passion, and he taught it as well as government throughout his career. He was a very popular teacher, being named Teacher of the Year many times. He was also a coach of football, wrestling, and track, and had a great impact on the lives of many young people. Fred was also instrumental in starting the Canton Athletic Hall of Fame, and he was also initiated into it as a coach. He was an avid golfer, and served as president of the Canton Country Club.


Per Fred’s wishes, there will be no services, cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton. Private family burial of ashes will take place in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Memorial in Fred’s name can be made to Canton High School Athletic Department.
