Oscar Ernst

Canton – Oscar W. Ernst, 94, of Canton passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Graham Hospital, Canton.
He was born May 23, 1920, in St. Johns, IL to Frank O. and Nellie (Jones) Ernst.
He married Irene Manis on February 1, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO.  She preceded him in death on July 3, 2010.
He is survived by one son, Larry (Liz) Ernst Sr and one daughter, Ruth (Bill) Maxson, both of Canton; five granddaughters, Michelle Meier, Angel, and Samantha Ernst, and Gretchen Maxson and Sara (Richard) Neuneker; and four great-grandchildren, Darrion, Rheina, Matthew, and Jordon.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Frank Jr, Eugene, and Lyle Dean; one grandson, Larry Ernst Jr, and one granddaughter, Amy Maxson.
He graduated from Du Quoin High School in 1939 and went to work for Freeman United Coal Co (United Electric), working for 44 ½ years in Madisonville, KY, Du Quoin, IL, and Banner, IL serving as chief electrician and later as superintendent.  He enlisted in the Army Air Corp shortly before World War II and served five years.
He enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, working in his garden and yard, going to auctions, tinkering with anything mechanical, and living in Okeechobee, FL during the winter.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, the Canton VFW and a past member of the Canton American Legion.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, April 10th at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton with visitation one hour prior.  Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate.  Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Canton.
Memorials may be made to the Canton American Legion Baseball Team or the First Baptist Food Pantry.
