George "Gene" Smith

Breeds – George E. “Gene” Smith, 91, of Breeds, IL passed away at 8:55 PM Friday, April 10, 2015 at Graham Hospital, Canton.
He was born September 30, 1923 in Tablegrove, IL to William L. and Helena (Helle) Smith.
Gene married Leatha Fay Oldham on January 17, 1944.
She survives along with one son, Gary A. (Evelyn) Smith of Canton; one daughter, Bonnie (Thomas) Lefler of Cuba; daughter-in-law, Sharon Smith of Canton; one grandson, Harold A. (Michele) Smith; five granddaughters, Tina (John) Pasley, Tammy (James) Kem, Kim (Robbie) Bull, Candy (Craig) Harkless and Peggy (Jim) Lewis; fourteen great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Forrestlea Nolan of Dunfermline and Della “Bunny” Williams of Breeds.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Harold E. Smith; a stillborn daughter; two brothers, Kenneth and Larry Smith; and one sister, Frances Engle.
Gene retired from IHC on September 30, 1974.
Gene enjoyed farm sales, auctions, and restoring old tractors.
He was a strong family man and loved traveling to Florida for the winter months.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 15th at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton with Rev. Brian Ebert officiating.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, April 14th.
Burial will be in Breeds-Orendorff Cemetery, rural Canton.
Memorials may be made to the Bryant Christian Church or the long term care activity fund @ Graham Hospital.
