Shirley Jean Lawver, 84, of Astoria, Illinois passed away at 11:06 am on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at her home in Astoria. She was born on October 5, 1939 in Vermont, Illinois, the daughter of Marshal Stoops and Margaret Renner Douglas. Shirley married Milton R. Lawver on June 6, 1964 in Lewistown, Illinois. Milton preceded Shirley in death on February 8, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Nancy Bollinger, and two brothers, Claire Ray and Michael Stoops. In addition, she is preceded in death by her brother-in-laws, Leroy Bollinger and Lee Umphryes.
She is survived by her daughters, Cindy (and Craig) Schaeffer, and Barbara (and Kent) Cowin, and nephew, Michael Bollinger. Three granddaughters, Kelsea Schaeffer, Brandy (and Keith) Lane, and Abbey (and Brent) Schaeffer-Thorman. Two grandsons, Dr. Broderick (and Sam) Cowin and Marshall Ty (and Tiffany) Cowin. Three great-granddaughters, Dakota Thorman, Makenna and Emaleigh Abernathy. Four great-grandsons, Reagan, Cameron, and Anderson Thorman, Peter James Allen Lane. One brother, Charles Stoops and one sister, Sharon Umphyres and multiple Nieces and nephews.
Throughout Shirley’s life she worked at multiple restaurants, Fibra Steel Inc, and Kroger Floral Department. She owned and operated Aunt Jean’s Flower Basket, Fitness at Sisters, and Time And Time Again.
Shirley loved the Lord, dancing, and spending time with her family. She kept busy with multiple hobbies including painting, crocheting, sewing, and flower gardening. Shirley was a mother and caretaker to many. She was an avid sports fan dedicated to whatever sport her grandchildren participated in. She was a pitcher for the Astoria Hustlers, retiring her softball glove at age of 50 years old.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria.
