Doris I. Garlisch

Doris Irene Garlisch was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on February 26, 1930. She was adopted by Louise and George Baker of Lincoln, Nebraska. Louise and Doris moved to Illinois after George’s death. Doris was later adopted by Karl Dierker when he and Louise married.

Doris graduated from Havana, IL. She was a switchboard telephone operator until her marriage to Robert (Bob) Garlisch on July 22, 1950. They moved to a farm between Havana and Lewiston, IL. They had two daughters.
Doris and Robert relocated from the farm to East Moline, IL in 1969. Doris worked at King’s Food Host and later in the kitchen of a nursing home. Doris and Bob moved to Havana, IL in 1979. Doris moved to Quincy, IL in 2022 to Adams Pointe Assisted Living. In 2023, she resided in Sunset Nursing Home until her passing on April 13, 2024.
Doris was an accomplished seamstress. She made clothes for herself and daughters. Doris also enjoyed sewing crafts, reading, music, and her Red Hats group. She was a lifelong member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and lived her faith. Doris had many friends including those from her 1930 Pen Pal club. She faithfully sent cards and notes to members of the group on holidays and birthdays.
She is survived by her husband Robert of Quincy, IL; Kathleen Garlisch of Quincy; Roberta (Ronald) Hersom of Emmetsburg, IA; two granddaughters, Laura (Ben) Sweet of Johnston, IA and Elizabeth (Jesse) Bird of Sioux Falls, SD. There are five great grandchildren: Ryan, Ellie, and Daniel Sweet and Emily and Elena Bird.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Havana, at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, with visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow the funeral at Laurel Hill Cemetery, in Havana. Rev. Ian Heinz will officiate.
