Robert "Bob" Grove

Robert “Bob” Lee Grove, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at Cedar Rapids, Iowa on January 20, 2024

Bob was born April 22, 1927 in Canton, Illinois, the son of C. Gayle and Josephine Grove. He was united in marriage to Kay Moore on October 25, 1946, in Canton, Illinois.

Bob graduated from Canton High School in 1945. He served in the United States Navy, 1945-46. In 1951 he graduated from Illinois College, in Jacksonville, Illinois and later earned his master’s degree in secondary education administration from the University of Illinois. He was an American History teacher and varsity coach (football, basketball), serving in that capacity at Galva High School in Galva, Illinois from 1951-1956, and at Naperville (Central) High School, in Naperville, Illinois, 1956-1985.

Bob was an outstanding high school and college athlete, he excelled in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at both Canton High School and Illinois College. As a coach, he was inducted into the Galva High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Ann (George) Grove Kort, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, his son Barry (Deb) Grove of Marion, Iowa, half siblings, Richard (Late Sharon) Grove, Michael (Roberta) Grove, Charles (Lori) Grove, Gregory (Nancy) Grove, Sandra Stoneking, Enola (Don) Mathis and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his two brothers, Jim and Gary Grove, and a sister, Rosemary Grove Hinderliter.

Bob loved golf, fishing, music and team sports.

Bob Grove was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, and friend. He will be greatly missed.

A private funeral service will be held on at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. Burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bob’s favorite charity, Alzheimer’s research.

Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
