Francis was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Emily, and brothers Herman and John. He is survived by his loving family including his wife Karen and former spouse Betty, children Kathy, Joe, Diane, Steve, and Missy; three step-children, Carol, Jen, and Sarah; siblings Mary, Paul, Jim, and David; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Raised as a farmer and a fixer, Francis showed an early aptitude for building and repairing machinery, later becoming an industrial machine repairman and farmer. As one of his sons describes him, Francis was a “jack-of-all-trades.” He often spent his down time tinkering in his machine shed, fixing one of his tractors or lawn mowers, his hands perpetually covered in grease.
He could be an emotionally reserved person, though if he wanted you to know how he felt, you would know. When his older brother Herman was looking to go off to college and leave the family farm, 13-year-old Frank helped Herman rebuild a car to help his brother pursue his future. This is the type of person he truly was. When something needed to be done, he would do it without ceremony.
Though he could have a hard exterior, he had a soft spot for his grandkids and great-grandkids, his many cats, and his beloved farm. He loved watching old westerns in his armchair, particularly John Wayne, tending to his chickens, and playing pranks on people so long as he wasn’t pranked back.
With loud guffawing laughs, Frank was the center of attention at group and family gatherings. He loved having his people around him, even until the end. He was passed into the hands of Jesus at the age of 90, surrounded by his children and grandchildren at Bickford Memory Care in Peoria, Illinois.
Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
