John Dehl McCombs

John Dehl McCombs, 76, of Petersburg, IL passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield on Saturday, February 4, 2023 with his wife by his side. He was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia on May 3, 1946 to Harry and Enid (Evans) McCombs. He married Linda Kording on December 19, 1965 in Petersburg, IL.

John is survived by his wife, Linda McCombs; children, Mike (Michelle) McCombs of Chatham, Shawn (Amy) McCombs of Jacksonville, Heather (Jeff) Reeves of Chatham; grandchildren, Andrea (Dillon) Hallemann, Brandon (Morgan) McCombs, Maggie McCombs (fiancé Will Dapron), Nathan McCombs (fiancée Taryn Ford), Gracie McCombs, Ryan McCombs, Addie McCombs, Isaac McCombs; one great grandchild, Elsie Lynn Hallemann; and three brothers, Chris (Heather) McCombs, Kerry (Annamaria) McCombs, and Craig McCombs, all of Australia. John was preceded in death by his parents, and one infant brother.
John had served in the Navy during Vietnam and was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Petersburg. John had worked as a railroad machinist, then as a mechanic for Allis-Chalmers in Greenview, and later as a clerk for the Secretary of State’s office for 32 years before retiring. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage and with his clocks, racing, and collecting model trains. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren in their sports and activities.
A memorial visitation will be held for John on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg, IL from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with Military Honors to follow at 4:00 pm at Hurley. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
