D. Martin Henard


D. Martin Henard, a World War II Army veteran and longtime Canton resident passed away on December 29, 2020 at the Loft in Canton.

He was born in Buncombe, IL on October 17, 1924 to Loyd and Orpha (Bost) Henard.  They preceded him in death along with nine siblings.

He married his wife of 67 years, Betty Jane Hocker on June 26, 1948 in Canton.  She preceded him in death on June 2, 2015.

Surviving are two daughters, Doris “Kay” Davis of Washington, IL, Martie Mummert of Riverside, CA, four grandchildren Tanya (Bill) Davis of O’Fallon, IL, James Ryan (Heather) Mummert, Melissa (John) Riordan, Jeffrey Mummert all of CA and two great grandchildren, Ashleigh and Jameson Riordan.

While serving in WWII in Germany he served as a guard at the Nuremburg trials.  Upon returning to Illinois after the war he worked for Keystone Steel and Wire for many years as a wire drawer before retiring.  His pastimes were fishing and hunting.  He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and doing for others.  He was always sharing vegetables from his garden.  He was a loyal participant at Temple Baptist Church for many years always sharing in God and Jesus to others.  A highlight of his life was going on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with his granddaughter, Melissa.   

A graveside service will be held at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton at 10 am, on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.  There will be no visitation.  A celebration of his life along with military rites will be held in the summer.

Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton has been entrusted with arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight for veterans.
