Lawrence "Larry" D. Kyes

Lawrence “Larry” D. Kyes, 84, of Petersburg, Illinois, formerly of Rochester, Illinois, passed away at his home with his family at his side on Sunday, July 2, 2023. He was born November 25, 1938, to L. Kent and Laverne (Hutchinson) Kyes in Springfield, Illinois.


Larry graduated from Rochester High School and attended Springfield Junior College. He married Barbara “Barb” VanMater on June 10, 1961, at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield. He worked for Menard Electric as a lineman for many years before retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Jaycees and worked at a local hospital as a Red Coat for 24 years. He also spent many years volunteering as a coach and umpire for the Petersburg Junior Baseball League. He loved birds, bee keeping and kept a beautiful flower garden. He also loved playing golf at Shambolee Golf Course in Petersburg. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan since his mother introduced him to them at the age of 5.

Larry is survived by his wife, Barb; his children, William “Bill” Kyes, Steven Kyes, and Kimberly Kyes; his grandchildren, Ashli (Patrick) Lewis, Zane (Hannah) Kyes, Alex (Ashley) Atterberry, Dalton Atterberry, Sophie Atterberry, Emily Justice and Lauren Justice; his great grandchildren, Evann, Hannah, Abbigail, Lily, Shelby, Willow, Archer and Oliver; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Robert, Donald and Bud Kyes; and two grandchildren, Zachary Kyes and Taylor Jo Kyes.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Parkside Tavern, 18190 State Park Rd, Petersburg, Illinois 62675, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Cremation rites were accorded by Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg.
