Charles “Leroy” Haynes


Charles “Leroy” Haynes, 90, of Canton, passed away at 8:00 AM on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at Red Oak Estates Memory Care in Canton. He was born on December 13, 1930 in Cuba, IL to Gleason A. and Merle E. (Hardy) Haynes. He married Dorothy Ann Heikes on March 27, 1955 at Locust Lane Church in Canton, she preceded him in death on August 12, 2010.

He is also preceded in death by his parents.

Leroy is survived by his four children, Terry Lee Haynes of Canton, Todd Alan (Carol) Haynes of Norfolk, VA, Cynthia Ann (Tom) Yocum of Canton, and Timothy Scott (Rhonda) Haynes of Canton, twelve grandchildren, Tara Beth Haynes, Kelly (Ryan) Turner, Jenna (Nathan) Santel, Samantha Haynes, Jessica Haynes, Jennifer (Bradly) Nims, Jackie (Tony) Jaume, Trina (Joshua) Jochums, Casie (Scott) Phegley, Kayla (Mitchell) Coonradt, Corey (Allie) Haynes, and Ryan (Emily) Haynes; thirteen great-grandchildren, Leah and Hayden Scharping, Colton Santel, Connor Hurst, Gavin Brown, Mason Nims, Caleb, Ethan, and Elena Jochums, Logan and Ben Phegley, and Madison and Knox Coonradt; Brother, Allan (Kris) Haynes of Cuba, Sister, Sheila (Richard) Formhals of Washington, and brother-in-law, Leon (Carolyn) Heikes of Canton.

Leroy worked at International Harvester Company for several years before working for the United States Post Office in Canton, as a clerk and carrier. He was appointed to assistant postmaster in 1966 and retired as superintendent of postal operations in April 1986. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Canton Elks Lodge #626. He served his country in the United States Army from 1951-1953 with the 25th Infantry Division in Korea.

Service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow service at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, IL. A visitation will be held an hour prior to service. Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Humane Society.
