Fred Kalhammer

Fred Kalhammer, 90, of Manito, passed away at The Lodge, in Manito, at 12:30 a.m., on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. He was born December 14, 1933, in Springlake Township, to Fredrick and Anna (Werdinger) Kalhammer. He married Dolores Dickson on January 15, 1955, in Pekin. She survives.


Mr. Kalhammer is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Manito; one son, Scott (Deborah) Kalhammer, of Forest City; one daughter, Denise Howard, of Marquette Heights; six grandchildren: Adam Howard, Ashley Howard, Taylor Meyer, Nathan Kalhammer, Brea Rohn, and Rikie Rabbe; as well as seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Mary (Bob) Becker and Ann (Fred) Shanklin; one brother, Frank (Mildred) Neulinger; as well as one son, Mark Kalhammer.
Mr. Kalhammer was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Manito. He served in the US Army in Germany. He started his career in farming, and later worked for Caterpillar, Inc., from 1971 until 1988. In 1984, he purchased Manito Hardware, which he ran from 1984 until 2013. He served as a Village Trustee and was very community involved. He enjoyed decorating downtown Manito with flowers and Christmas trees.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Manito, on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow the services at Meadowlawn Cemetery, in Manito. Hill Palmer Legion Post will provide military rites at the cemetery.
