Richard "Dick" E. McCloskey


Monterey – Richard “Dick” E. McCloskey, was born April 30, 1930, in Cuba, Illinois, to Glen and Lorena (Long) McCloskey. Preceding him in death is one son Dick McCloskey 5 brothers, Bill, Bob, Gene, Ken, and Vernon McCloskey. He is survived by one brother, Larry (Helen) McCloskey of Ohio, and one sister, Shirley (Delbert) Price of Alexis Illinois, one son, Danny (Mel) McCloskey of Manito, two step sons, Rodney (Sheila) Harris of Canton, and Jeffery (Lisa) Harris of Siren Wisconsin, seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, and one great grandchild due in March, and several nieces and nephews. He married Marilyn (Schuman) McCloskey in June of 2007. Dick was very proud of his 40 years 2 months and 23 days in the United States Army Artillery. Retiring with the rank of CW4- Chief Warrant Officer in 1983. Dick served in the Korea Conflict in 1950 – 1952 and was called back into service after retiring to serve in Desert Shield/Storm in March of 1991 – May of 1991. Dick worked hard all his life. He owned an ice house and delivered to Cuba Ice boxes at age 17, with the two trucks he also owned at age 15. He was a school bus driver at age 20, and owned and operated a gas station in Lewistown. He later owned a restaurant in Cuba “Dick’s Hangout”. He worked at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg, and International Harvester as an Industrial Engineer for 28 years until his retirement. Dick also was manager at LTD Industries in Lewistown, he owned and operated Manufacturing Services in Canton, and Rent a Bay in Monterey. Dick trained and owned German Shepards. His last dog he had was his beloved “Buddy”. Dick bought a 10-acre cornfield In Monterey in 1970’s and built a home and garage. Eventually he built the first storage business in Fulton County behind his home Rent A Bay. He sold the business in 1985. Dick got his pilot’s license and owned a Cessna airplane for many years. He and his wife traveled all over the United States on summer vacation and almost visited every state. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will immediately follow at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton. Memorials may be made to Fulton County Humane Society.
