Ethel L. Brewer

Lewistown- Ethel (Leonard) Brewer, 94, of Lewistown passed away Monday March 4, 2024 at Wesley Village in Macomb where she was a resident.


She was born December 24, 1929 to Deloss and Flossie (Shipp) Leonard at home in Bernadotte Township, Fulton County, IL. She married Virgil W. Brewer on October 27, 1956 at Providence Church, west of Lewistown. He died June 27, 2022. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, Pastor John Baumgartner IV, two sisters, Alzata Gorden, and Philomena Lester, and a close family friend, Linda Shawver. Surviving are three children, Ed (Adrina) Brewer of Lewistown, Virginia Baumgartner of Bloomsburg, PA; and Delbert (Annette) Brewer of rural Banner, eight grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.


As a child Ethel rode her pony Tinkle to Hulvey School, a one room schoolhouse, after graduating from LCHS in 1947, she then worked for Martin M. Love, Law Office, for 10 years. In the early years of marriage Ethel and Virgil operated a Grade A dairy farm. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Colchester, and served the Lord in the former First Baptist Church in Lewistown for 37 years where she taught shorthand and bookkeeping at the Christian Academy. She then served at Grace Baptist Church in Havana. She was also a member of the Lewistown Alumni Association for many years. Ethel was a wonderful cook and would enter baked goods for judging at the Fulton County Fair. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling with Virgil all over the United States. Ethel’s family would like to thank the staff at Wesley Village in Macomb, and the MDH Hospice team for taking such wonderful care of her.


Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday March 11th at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Pastor Caleb Sparrow officiating Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown. A visitation will be held from 3-5 PM Sunday March 10th at the memorial home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Lewistown Alumni Association, First Baptist Church of Colchester, Wesley Village of Macomb, and MDH Hospice of Macomb.
