Roy graduated from Canton High School in 1956 and earned his Associates from Spoon River College in 1968. An Army veteran, Roy retired from International Harvester’s Accounting Department in 1993. He is best known for his vast knowledge of Central Illinois sports spanning the past 100 years and for his 40 years of officiating local basketball, baseball and softball games.
In 2008, Roy co-authored “From Plowboys to Little Giants; a history of Canton Basketball”. He was a member of the Canton American Legion where he served as past Commander, the Masonic Lodge and the Canton Area Heritage Center. He was the former President of the Canton Little Giant Booster Club and a founding member of the Canton Sports Hall of Fame. In 2024 Roy was awarded the Vic Sereno Contribution to Youth Award by the Canton Family YMCA.
Roy is survived by Rachel (Howell), his wife of 60 years, son, Randy (Tory) Hopper of Canton, daughter, Rhonda (Ed) Georgieff of Peoria, grandchildren, Trenton (Alex) Hopper of Fairview, Meghan (Zach) Brown of Camp Grove, Sarah Georgieff of Peoria, great grandchildren, Addison and Everson Hopper.
Roy was preceded in death by one son, Rodney and three brothers, Norman, Dale and Don.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026 from 5-7 pm at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10 am, at the funeral home.
Burial with military honors will follow at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Canton Booster Club or Canton Family YMCA.
