Jesse “Jute” Chambers


Lewistown- Jesse “Jute” Chambers Jr; 90, of Lewistown, passed away at 11:45 PM Monday October 2, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born March 13, 1927 at rural Delmont, South Dakota, the son of Jesse and Bertha (White) Chambers. He married Wanda Barker in February 1950 at Lewistown.. She survives with three children, Don (Betty) Chasteen of Elmhurst, Tate (Cathy) Chambers of Morton, and Lori (Linda Branton) Chambers of Lewistown, nine grandchildren, Nicole (Brad) Hardesty, Andrea (Mike) Tromp, Katie Chambers, Jeff (Erin) Chambers, Jessica (Dr. Dan) Bunzol, Sarah Tate Chambers, Jason (Lindsey) Ellison, and Shawn Ellison, nine great grandchildren, and one sister, Ruby Dean of New Lenox. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Jute was a star basketball player in high school and turned down an offer to play basketball at Bradley University to join the Army at the end of WW 2.

Jute retired from the Illinois Power plant in Havana. He had also owned and operated several local businesses for over 50 years. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Lewistown American Legion. He was also a member of the Crossroads Methodist Church in Lewistown, the Alligators Club, and Ameren Retirees Club. He had been involves with various youth activities, and was an avid Cubs fan.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Crossroads Methodist Church in Lewistown, with Reverend Larry Wright officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 PM at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by Lewistown VFW Post 5001 and American Legion Bishop Post 1. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crossroads Methodist Church.
