Brian Telander


Cuba – Brian Telander, 78, of Cuba, passed away at 7:50 am Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton.  He was born on September 28, 1939 in Peoria to Fredrick and Edith (McNaught) Telander.  Brian married Marilyn Higgs on August 5, 1961 in Princeville.  She preceded him in death on July 7, 2011.  Also preceding in death were his parents.  Surviving are two children; Mark (Jackie) Telander of Galesburg and  Beth (Ralph) Simpson of Fiatt, one brother Rick Telander of Pekin, three grandchildren; Dalton Simpson of Avon, Tyler Telander of Normal, and Dylan Simpson of London Mills, and two brother-in-law’s; Dr. Richard Higgs of Las Cruses, N.M. and Donald (Margie) Higgs of Rochelle.
Brian graduated from Princeville High School in 1957, University of Illinois in 1961 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture Education and a Masters of Education in 1967. He was the Vocational Agricultural teacher at Downs Ellsworth High School from 1961-1963, then taught at Chandlerville High School from 1963-1967 as the Vocational Agriculture and Biology  teacher until moving on to teach at Spoon River College in the Diesel and Power Systems Technology until retiring in 1998 after 31 years.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he has served as a Deacon and Elder and was the current Treasurer.  Brian has been involved with East Elm Apartments for 36 years serving as the President and then Director and was currently the Business Manager.  He was awarded in 2015 the Site Manager of the Year in Illinois.
Visitation will be 2- 5 pm, Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.  Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.  Services will be 10 am Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton with the Rev. Tim Bauler officiating.  Burial will follow in Fiatt Cemetery in Fiatt, IL.  Memorials can be made to the Brian Telander Scholarship at Spoon River College c/o MidAmerica National Bank.
