Burta Owings

Canton – Wilburta Irene “Burta” Owings, 95, of Canton died at 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Sunset Manor in Canton.
She was born March 17, 1919 in Canton, to Clyde R. and Tracy C. (Gray) Sheets.  She married Charles W. Owings on October 6, 1940 in Kahoka, MO.  He preceded her in death on August 28, 2003.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Carla Gray of Canton; and three extended sons, Steve White, Ray McKinney, and Rick Murphy, all of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Carl J. Sheets.
Burta was a graduate of Canton High School.  Following school she worked at Hechts in Canton before going to work at Scripp’s Department Store, where she retired from as manager in May, 1970. 
She was past president of the Business Professional Women in Canton, past Chairman of the Retail Trades Committee (affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce), and recognized in the Who’s Who of American Women.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Canton, where she was a former Deaconess and helped to organize the Food Pantry.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.  Rev. Monroe Bailey will officiate.  Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Food Pantry.
