Vearl “Gene” Taffar, 84, of Canton, formerly of West Plains, MO, passed away at his home at 6:28 AM on Sunday, February 9, 2025. He was born on June 12, 1940 in Tulare, CA, to William Walter and Lina Leora (Bennett) Taffar. He married Sue Towery on September 12, 1991. She survives.
He is also survived by four children, Jason (Sherri) Taffar, Gene William (Eriko) Taffar, Jennifer (Jason) Henderson, and Rashanii Kickinghorse; nine grandchildren, Joshua Cottingham, Emily (Bryan) Clark, Baylee (Aislinn) Henderson, Jenna Jo Henderson, Noah Henderson, Zachary Taffar, Elizabeth Taffar, Raven Taffar, and Ian Taffar; one great-granddaughter, Morgen Cottingham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Walter Mearl Taffar, William Ray Dean Taffar, and Bearl Taffar; and four sisters, Mary Jewell Whitener, Sybil Josephine Hallmark, Vivian Faye Upton, and Shirley Pauline Upton.
Gene worked and retired from Caterpillar after 32 years. He enjoyed hunting, reading about history, and playing pool. He also enjoyed refinishing gun stocks and working on old guns. He was an avid animal lover, especially his dogs.
