Essie M. DeGroot

Essie M. DeGroot, 91, of Manito, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, February 4, 2023. She was born December 27, 1931 in Jewett, Missouri to the late Virgil and Delia West Shoemaker. She married Charles W DeGroot in Virginia, Illinois on May, 20, 1950. He died December 11, 2006.

She was a dedicated wife and family was deeply important to her. Up until Charles death in 2006 they enjoyed many travels together. Essie loved spending time in her garden, feeding the squirrels and took tremendous pride in her home.
Essie is survived by her granddaughter, Angie L. (Jeff Bedolli) Beal, of Cortez, Colorado, a brother, Alvin “Pete” (Ruth) Shoemaker, of Bath, her half-brother, Kenneth Shoemaker, three half-sisters, Lily Mibbs, Ruth Richardson, and Diane Lind. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Cotton and Shirley Shoemaker.
In addition to her parents and husband Charles, Essie was preceded in death by two children, Debbie Harris and Chuck DeGroot, a granddaughter, Paula DeGroot, and two brothers, Eddie Shoemaker and Lee Shoemaker.
A visitation will be held on Saturday morning, February 11, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Maas-Hurley Funeral Home in Manito. A graveside funeral service will follow at 12:30 pm in Walnut Ridge cemetery, in Virginia, Illinois.
