Martha Canada

Martha Canada, 81, of Manito, passed away on Saturday morning, June 18, 2022 at the Hopedale Nursing Home. She was born February 11, 1941, in Pekin, to the late Paul and Mary Schimmelpfenning Hintz. She married Richard “Gene” Canada on April 1, 1962 the Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Manito. He passed away July 29, 2014.


She graduated of Forman High School in 1959, and over the years she cooked in several restaurants in Manito and Pekin until 1984. She was a member of the Tazewell County Home Extension. She enjoyed cooking and crafts, and the love of her life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Martha is survived by a daughter Mary C. Canada, of Quincy, IL, two sons, Curt (Shawn) Canada, of Muscatine, IA, and Robert (Robin) Canada, of Mason City, Il, a step-daughter, Val VanEtten, of Morton, Il, 10 grandchildren, Trevor (Jeanine) Hipsher, of Marquette Heights, Amanda (Jason) Babin, of Morton, Timothy (Carolynn) Freed, of Peru, Joshua (Samantha) Canada, of Davenport, IA, Samantha (Zeb Zillon) Freed, of Mt. Sterling, Courtney (Kyle) Durflinger, of McLean, Jessica Canada, of Muscatine, IA, Taggart VanEtten, of Morton, Cody Canada, of Mason City, Trent Herman, of Des Moines, IA, and CJ Breckenridge, of Muscatine, IA, and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Henry (Sharilyn) Hintz, of Manito, several nieces and nephews, brother and sisters-in-law, as well as her second family at the Bickford Assisted Living Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, Paul and Mary Hintz, a brother, Lester Hintz and a daughter, Connie Canada

Martha was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manito where a visitation will be held on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the church the following day, Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 11:00 am, Pastor Martin Eden, officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito.
