Charles William “Bill” Watts, 89, of Havana, passed away at 10:43 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at the Lodge in Manito. He was born on February 12, 1935 in Havana to Clarence “Kak” and Frances Lorine (McGinley) Watts. He married Marla Joyce Figle on August 26, 1960 in Havana and she preceded him in death on May 21, 2019.Bill is survived by his two daughters, Terri (Denny) Fox of Bettendorf, Iowa and Penny (Don) Roch of Havana; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Lori; and sister, Jean McLammer.
Bill joined the Navy in 1954 and later served in the U.S. Marines as a Medical Corpsman. He was a member of the Havana Church of Christ. He worked as a mail carrier for the USPS and at a fish market with his family, and later as maintenance for Chataqua Refuge for 30 years before retiring in 1990. He was a fireman for 60 years and was a former chief of both the Havana City and Rural Fire Departments, where he was named Chief Emiritus in 2009. Bill was a member of the Havana Optimist Club, VFW Post #6408, and American Legion Post #138.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., also at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Pastor Bill Boyce will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Military detail will be provided by VFW Post #6408 and American Legion Post #138.
Memorial donations may be made in Bill’s name to Havana Rural Fire Department. Online condolences can be left for his family at www.hurleyfh.com.
