W. Gene Hardin


Canton- W. Gene Hardin, 78, of Canton, passed away at 2:20 AM on Monday September, 4, 2023 at Graham Hospital. He was born in Vancouver, Washington, on October 18, 1944, a son of Loren and Kathleen (Robinson) Hardin. Gene married Phyllis “Phebe” Wise on February 15, 1964 at the First Baptist Church in Canton. She survives.


Also surviving is his son, John (Connie) Hardin of Canton; one granddaughter, Hanna (Marcie) Quinones of Canton; two step- grandchildren, Hillary (Sean) Kelly of Petersburg, and Garrett (Danielle) Carruthers of Canton; one great-granddaughter, Allana Ward; and one brother, Steve (Carolyn) Hardin of Mattoon.


Preceding Gene in death were both of his parents; one grandson, John W. Hardin; and one sister, Rosemarie McDowell.

Gene worked as an electrician for Commonwealth Edison Powerton Substation in Pekin, and was former President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Local 1361 Union. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton. He enjoyed a Busch Light with friends after a round of golf. Gene also enjoyed in his younger years racing enduro motorcycles, coaching Little League Baseball, but most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren.


Per Gene’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes and Crematory. A private graveside service and burial of ashes will be held for Gene at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton Rev. Monroe Bailey will officiate. Memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church in Canton.
