Louise E. Schafer

Louise E. Schafer, 98, of Mason City passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Mason City Area Nursing Home. She was born on February 4, 1925 in Mason City to Jonah and Nina (Austin) Watkins. On March 26, 1947 in Mason City she married John C. Schafer who preceded her in death in 1999.

Louise is survived by 3 children; Susan (Brent) Schwarm of Vandalia, Linda (Dick) Garlisch of Forest City and Dean (Jan) Schafer of San Jose, 7 grandchildren; Julie (Kevin) Roberts, Brad (Sarah) Horner, Brent (Michael) Horner, Scott (Brandy) Garlisch, Stephanie Schafer, Jennifer (Josh) Wagner, Nicole Schafer, Christine (Cory Bagby) Schafer and step-grandchildren; Brandy Shirley and Chelsea (Dane) Lemme, 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband John.
Louise was a 1942 graduate of Mason City High School and was member of the Mason City United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school. Her husband and her lead Pleasant Workers 4-H Club for 25 years, and she was inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015. She enjoyed participating in Woman’s Literature Club, Mason County HCE and the Mason County Farm Bureau.
A funeral for Louise will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Mason City United Methodist Church, burial to follow at Mason City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mason County 4-H and Junior Shows, Mason City Methodist Church, or the Mason City Area Nursing Home Activities Department.
