Betty Mannahan

Betty Mannahan, 98, of Canton, passed away, Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Graham Hospital in Canton. She was born on March 30, 1925, in Jacksonville, Illinois, to William Minor Goodsell and Alice (Burger) Fillager. They preceded her in death along with one brother, Billy Minor. She married H. William “Bill” Mannahan, on July 27, 1946, at the First Baptist Church in Canton. He also preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters, Susan (the late Richard) Meade, Tilli (Mike) Schnetzler, and Nancy (Tim) Gibbons, one sister, Nancy (the late John) Norris, seven grandchildren, Carolyn (Tim) Papuga, Elizabeth (Cody) Sarenius, Katy O’Brian, Molly Helfrich, Patrick (Maria) O’Brian, Timothy Gibbons, and Stacy (Dale) Robertson, sixteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Betty graduated high school in Canton with the class of 1943. She later attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri and later received a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Education from Bradley University. She was a teacher for twenty years, first teaching at Central School and then at Issac Swan. During her career she taught junior primary and Title I Reading. Betty enjoyed music, watching sports on tv, and attending events from Nascar to baseball. She enjoyed fishing and golfing. Most of all Betty loved being a mother and grandmother to all of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Shield’s Chapel United Methodist Church where her funeral will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place following the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. Memorials can be made to Shield’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Canton school aged Special Olympics, or to Canton Crush adults’ Special Olympics.
