Leroy graduated from Tallula High School in 1953. He served our grateful nation by joining the Army a couple of years after graduation. He married Mary Massingill on June 10, 1962, and they had just observed their 60th year of marriage. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Petersburg, a longtime member of the Rotary Club in Petersburg where he was a Paul Harris Award recipient and a member of the Ashland Masonic Lodge #23 where he received the 50-year pin. He had many antique tractors that he was very proud of and had received a first in class plaque for them several times. He was also recognized for his volunteer work with the Cub Scouts while his sons were members.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Mary; his four sons, Ron (Jeanie) Pettit, Doug (Robin) Pettit, Andy Pettit and Jerry Pettit, all of Petersburg; grandchildren, Ryan (Lara) Pettit, Rachel Pettit, Brad (Becca) Pettit, Jacob (Sarah) Pettit, Annie Pettit and Allison Pettit; great grandchildren, Cheyenne Pettit, Alivia Jo Pettit and Leland Pettit; his siblings, Betty (John) Downey, Ann Martin and Floyd “Tip” Pettit; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary “Nip” Kahbeah.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2022, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 12, 2022, at the First Christian Church in Petersburg beginning at 10 am. Pastor Keith Masten and Pastor Rick Williams will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg.
