Verlyn K. Vaughn

It is with great sadness that the family of Verlyn K. Vaughn announce that he passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 7:40 PM at Red Oak Estates in Canton, IL.


Verlyn was born on April 9, 1931 to William and Bertha (Beaird) Vaughn. They both preceded him in death. Verlyn was the oldest of four children. Surviving are his siblings, Ruth (Roderick) Pollitt, Albert Vaughn and Janet (Raymon) Meyer. Verlyn graduated from Lewistown High School in 1949.

Verlyn worked through high school at Day & Palin as a carry-out boy and became produce manager. He went on to work for Edwin Barrett as a farm hand. Edwin helped Verlyn get started in farming. Verlyn served in the Korean Conflict in 1954. Upon his return, he went to work for Brown, Lynch & Scott, where he became the general manger until 1963. While working at BLS Verlyn was also a security officer at Community Bank. When he left BLS he went to work for Spoon River FS in 1986, but continued farming. Verlyn was police and fire commissioner in Canton for many years. He also served as Friendship Festival president and was on the Ag council for 25 years. He enjoyed being involved in his communities.

Verlyn married Darlena “Dot” (Black) on March 6, 1955. She preceded him in death on July 16, 1985. Verlyn and Dot had two children, Michael K. (Joan) Vaughn of Fountain Valley, CA and Janice K. Vaughn of Canton, IL. Also surviving are Taylor L. Stewart of Canton, IL, granddaughter, Joe (Kim) Fushey of Matthews, NC, step-grandson, and Ava Rose Fushey, step-great-granddaughter.

Verlyn dated Helen (Pigg) Moore for several years until her passing. Verlyn remained very close to the Pigg and Martindale families for the rest of his life.

Verlyn married Carol Holthaus on February 14, 1998. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2001. Verlyn’s marriage to Carol added five children, Michael (Colleen) Holthaus, Craig (Carol) Holthaus, Debbie (Jurgen) Heitmann, Darin Holthaus and Danielle (Jay) Gibbons. Grandchildren include, Morgan, Kayla and Matthew Holthaus, Jens, Soren and Brennan Heitmann and Archer, Esme and Indigo Gibbons.

In the past year or so, Verlyn enjoyed spending time with his very friend, Marilyn Bull. They enjoyed long drives, going out to eat and visiting many state parks.

Verlyn leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He never knew a stranger, was a man of strong values, integrity and honesty. Verlyn had a zest for life and a laugh that was not only contagious but could be heard great distances. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the funeral home. Chaplin Dwight Winnett will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, IL.
