Melvin “Mel” Fletcher


Canton – Melvin “Mel” Fletcher, 92, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at his residence.  He was born on July 3, 1927 in Kilbourne, IL to Timothy and Esther (Curry) Fletcher.  They preceded him in death.

He married Roberta Van den Arend on June 13, 1954 in Pekin.  She survives.

Also surviving is one son Todd (Kelli) Fletcher of Canton, two grandchildren, Jace (Delanie) Fletcher, Kelsie Fletcher, one brother, Tim (Velva) Fletcher of Matanzas Beach, IL and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one son Cory.

Mel served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  He worked at Easton and Oakford Schools, later at the Canton Junior High School as a math teacher and Guidance Counselor and lastly at the Canton High School as a Guidance Counselor and bus driver retiring in 1986.  He was a member of the Canton American Legion, Shields Chapel Church and also a past member of the Brotherhood of Shields Chapel Church.  Mel also was a Charter member of the Jedidiah Chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association, the YMCA, and the Canton Area Citizens for Environmental Issues and served Meals on Wheels.

Services will be 10:30 pm Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton with a luncheon to follow at Shields Chapel Church.

A visitation will be Tuesday night from 5- 7 pm.  At the funeral home

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 pm, following the luncheon the Fairview Cemetery in Rural Bath.

 Memorials can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Shields Chapel Church or to Donor’s Choice.
