Richard L. "Dick" Heitz

Richard L. Heitz, 68, of Cuba, passed away at 6:21 AM on Friday, February 21, 2025 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 23, 1956 in Canton, a son of Roy and Eloise (Phillips) Heitz. He married Marcia Billingsley on November 14, 1981 in Camden, Illinois. She survives.


Also surviving are his daughters, Lindsey (Nic) Lindsey of Cuba; Ashley (Tony) Kozicki of Sherrard, Illinois; four grandchildren, Luke, Liam, Leia, and Arya; sisters, Charlotte (Steve) Cowser of West Branch, Iowa; Dianna Graham of Ellisville.


Preceding Richard in death were his parents, adopted-son, Michael Doubet, whom passed away in 2006, brother-in-law, Gary Graham, and nephew, Michael Cowser.


He worked and retired from Illinois Dept of Corrections as a lieutenant after 25 years of service. Richard was a union man. He was President of AFSCME Local #3585 and after retirement he was President of AFSCME Sub-chapter #81. During his career he served on the contract bargaining committee for decades, was elected to the 3rd level grievance committee for CU500 from its inception, served as the Executive Vice-President of AFSCME Council 31 for 20 years, and on the Executive Board for AFSCME Council 31 retirees for 10 years. In 2023 he was inducted into the AFSCME Council 31 Hall of Fame. Dick was a lifelong farmer where he spent all of his spare time working around the farm. He was a lifelong motorcycle rider, enjoyed traveling around the world with his family, and always had fun no matter what he was doing. People will remember Dick as being one of the funniest guys in any group, always making others laugh. Most of all though, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, where visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday evening, March 1, 2025. Rev. Ellen Dodd will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in Rushville Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Fulton County or Schuyler County Humane Societies.
