Francenia “Topsy” Bell Gibbs


Canton – Francenia “Topsy” Bell Gibbs, 86 of Canton, Illinois, passed away suddenly at her home on December 30, 2017. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1931, she lived in Canton since 1964. She graduated from nursing school at Garfield Park Hospital, where she met her husband Dr. Jack L. Gibbs. They were married a year later in June 1953.

 A devoted wife and loving mother, she is survived by her husband, her four children; Michael (Cindy), John ( Annamarie), Anne (Matthew), and Jennifer; ten grandchildren, Jack, Ryan, Rebecca, Jacquelin, Samantha, Adam, Megan, Joseph, Sarah, Abigail; one great-grandchild, Adele; one brother, Richmond ; two sisters, Winona and Ruth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Hamilton Fleming.

Mrs. Gibbs was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, PEO, DAR and the Altruistic Club. She was the first president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mason District Hospital in Havana, Illinois, and together with her husband supported the founding of the hospital, which opened in 1957. Mrs. Gibbs was a registered nurse. When her children were older she spent several years working for the Fulton County Public Health Department.

A memorial service is scheduled at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, and the family will be receiving friends and family starting at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at the Waterford Cemetery in rural Lewistown. Rev. Tim Bauler will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, Canton.
