Virginia Barnard


Canton – Virginia Barnard, 96, of Canton, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Graham Hospital in Canton.
She was born on August 4, 1920, in Norris to Lee T. and Mary Louise (Robison) McBroom.
She married L.D. “Barney” Barnard on
July 31, 1940 in Norris.  He preceded her in death on May 3, 2005.
Survivors include one daughter Charlotte Ann (Rich) Myers of Norris, two sons Leonard (Wendy) Barnard of Canton, J.C. (Tammy) Barnard of Canton, eight grandsons, one granddaughter, and 17 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Mary Louise Effland and two brothers.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Canton.
She graduated from Canton High School in 1938 the attended University of Illinois for two years.
She was a 4-H leader for 68 years, Sunday School teacher for 17 years, Fulton-McDonough County Mental Health Board from 1973-1984, PTA for 24 years, Chaperone at the Illinois State Fair Jr Department for 35 years, Sheep Superintendent at Fulton County Fair from 1978-2015, Order of the Eastern Star Fairview Chapter #99 for 65 years, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a Friend in 1994, Canton Little Giant Hall of Fame as a friend in 2006, Leo Sharp Farm Bureau Award in 2008, Grand Marshall for Canton Friendship Festival Parade in 1985, Canton Homecoming Parade Marshall twice in 1998 and 2014,  FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer in 1996, YWCA Salute to Women of Achievement in 2000, 4-H Hall of Fame in 2006, and Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at noon, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with a visitation 2 hours prior at the church.
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Canton Little Giant Foundation or to Fulton County 4-H SEFF.
