A 1970 graduate of Illinois State University, he then began his career as a high school history teacher in Mazon, Illinois. On June 14, 1975, he married Linda A. Loiselle and they have three daughters.
After receiving his Master’s Degree from Illinois State University in 1977, he became the high school principal in Potomac, Illinois. In 1986, he continued his distinguished career as high school principal of Farmington, Illinois until he retired in 2003.
Whether hiking, canoeing, fishing or merely relaxing on his backyard patio, he loved the outdoors. His true devotion was his family. He was always available to lend a sympathetic ear. He enjoyed socializing and never knew a stranger.
In retirement he dedicated his time to caring for his father and his faith. He was ordained a Catholic Deacon in 2007 and continued his life of service as Deacon to both St. Matthew’s Parish in Farmington and St. Mary’s Parish in Canton, Illinois.
Gary is survived by his wife, Linda, and his daughters, Alexis (Dan) Jansen of Champaign, IL; Sara (Matt) Haas of Burlington, Iowa; Andrea (Scott) Schultz Winter of Freeport, Illinois and his grandchildren; Emma Maubach, Daniel Haas, Benjamin Haas, Henry Winter, Cora Winter, Amelia Winter. He is also survived by his sister, Lisa (Bob) Themer, of Kankakee, Illinois and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his infant sister, Poly Ann Schultz, brother, Barton Schultz, his parents, and son-in-law, Christopher Maubach.
Visitation will be 3 PM to 7 PM at Anderson Sedgwick Funeral Home at 341 E. Fort St., Farmington, IL 61531 on Sunday, April 23, 2023. Funeral Mass will be at St. Matthew’s Church, 156 E. Vernon St., Farmington, IL 61531 at 11 AM on Monday, April 24, 2023. Monsignor Timothy Nolan will officiate. Burial will follow services at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Farmington Academic Foundation and St. Matthew’s Church.
