Charles was born on March 13, 1937 to William and Murlea (Carter) Roberts on a farm south of Bryant. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew, James G. Brecher, and one niece, Tara B. Brecher, both of Phoenix, AZ. Charles is survived by his former wife, Betty Roberts of Bryant and their two children, Denise (Larry) Grzanich of Canton and Kevin (Nancy) Roberts of Bryant; five grandchildren, John (Matt Ferguson) Colglazier of Jeffersonville, NY, Mindy (Ty) Lockhart of Bend, OR, Aimee Roberts of Macomb, IL, Jennifer (Isaac) Teel of Pekin, IL, Kaitlin Roberts of St. Cloud, MN; one sister, Martha Arnold of Cave Creek, AZ; and one niece, Alisa (Steve) Oujiri of Cave Creek, AZ. For the past ten years, Charles enjoyed spending time with his very special friend, Cleo Olmstead.
Charles was a man of deep faith and worshiped at the Bryant United Methodist Church and then the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Charles grew up working on the family farm. He graduated Canton High School in 1955 and attended the University of IL in Champaign and Western IL University in Macomb. He joined the US Army Reserve in 1959 and received an Honorable discharge on December 9, 1964. He continued to work on the family farm raising his family. Charles was a very resilient man surviving several serious accidents. He was quick to say his faith, family, and friends helped him through his pain and discomfort and kept him going. Charles loved shooting guns, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed sharing his garden produce with others. Many people knew him as The Tomato Man.
Visitation will from 5-7 PM on Monday, May 1, 2023 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton, IL. Rev. Dr. Shalom Renner will officiate. Burial will follow services at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Canton, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.
