Diann Marie Bennett, 94, of Petersburg Illinois, passed away Sunday March 5, 2023, at SpringfieldMemorial Hospital in the company of her children.
Diann was born December 7, 1928, in Bennington, Kansas, the child of George S. and Marian E. Davis.
She graduated from Wamego High School and Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas with High
Honors.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister, Alice Hartig, cousin, James Chaffee, and son,
Stuart Bennett. She is survived by her children Liane Hammer (Greg), Harold Bennett ( Gaylene), Susan
Wilde (Dayton), and Karen Higginbotham (David), her grandchildren Tavelle Hammer (Shirley), Shalika
Hart, Zein Hammer, Erin Bennett (Danny), Elliot Bennett, Sami Quinn (Dominick), Benjamin
Wilde(Jordan), Martha Wilde, Caitlyn Higginbotham, Joseph Higginbotham, 6 great grandchildren, as
well as several nieces, and nephews.
Diann taught high school mathematics prior to moving to Illinois and raising her family. She was a
beloved member of the Petersburg United Methodist Church and served in numerous local
organizations including the DAR, Petersburg Town and County Women’s club, Cub scouts, Brownies,
New Salem Shooting Stars, and United Methodist Women. As her children began to graduate, she
returned to school in her 50s at Lincoln Land Community College. With her new computer skills, she set
up accounting systems as the bookkeeper for R&H Home Supply office, and finally retired at age 91.
Throughout her life she enjoyed visitors, opening her home to all, playing cards, growing and arranging
flowers, swimming, reading, raising cats, tutoring, and visiting her family far and near.
Her positive energy, giving heart, humor, and sense of adventure will be greatly missed by friends and
family alike. Her legacy will remain in the lives she has touched over the years.
Mom, we will miss your unconditional love, ready laughter, sage advice, listening ear, love of life, and
sweet smile. You are and will continue to be much loved.
The Celebration of life will be on April 22nd at 3:00 PM at the Petersburg United Methodist Church. Memorials may
be made to Petersburg United Methodist Church, UGA Fisheries Society Student Travel Fund, or charity
of your choice.
