Kenneth W. Ogden

 

Kenneth W. Ogden, 72, of Cuba, IL, passed away at 8:39 am on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Clayberg Fulton County Nursing Center in Cuba. He was born on Sunday, January 28, 1951 in Havana, IL, the son of DeVere and Mary (Grove) Ogden.

He is survived by his three sisters; Nancy (and Kevin) Roberts of Bryant, IL, Patty (and Gary) Merrill of Canton, IL, and Brenda (and Chris) VanAllman of Chicago, IL, and five nieces and nephews; Aimee Roberts, Jennifer (and Isaac) Teel, Kaitlin Roberts, Jessica Merrill, and Paul VanAllman.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents.

He loved to sketch or draw, gardening, bird watching, wildlife, and county music, especially Johnny Cash. He also loved watching western movies, especially ones featuring John Wayne, and could not be bothered while watching. Kenneth was a history buff and had a special interest in World War II history.

Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, May 1, 2023 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Kevin Roberts will be officiating. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clayberg Fulton County Nursing Center in Cuba.

Catherine Schaad

Catherine S. Schaad, 49, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 12:14 pm on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at The Loft in Canton, IL. She was born on September 1, 1973 in Macomb, IL, the daughter of Frank and Nancy (McDonald) Hite.


She is survived by her fiancĂ©, David Belville of Astoria, 2 sons, Alex Schaad of Bellmead, TX and Will Belville of Astoria, mother, Nancy Hite of Industry, IL, 2 step-sons, Abe (and Alisha) Belville of Astoria and Jordy (and Shelby) Belville of Petersburg, IL, 4 step-daughters, Erica (and Bo) Peterman and Isabelle (and Matt) Slaughter, both of Astoria, Olivia (and Doug) Phillips of Plymouth, IL and Niki Davis of Centerville, IA, 9 step-grandchildren, her sister Sarah (and Anthony) Pascucci of McHenry, IL, and her brother William ‘Joe’ (and Tammy Caldwell) Hite of Industry, IL.

Cathy was preceded in death by her father, Frank Hite.

She enjoyed crafting, gardening and music. She loved her family dearly.

Services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Matt Haberman will officiate. Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to the service on Sunday. Memorials may be made to Camp Emmanuel in Astoria.

Ellen Ruth Smith

Ellen Ruth (Anselmo) Smith, 64, of London Mills, passed away, Wednesday, April 26, 2023. She was born to Frank and Theresa “Jane” (Drnec) Anselmo on January 3, 1959. She is preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Mike Smith, two children, Sarah (Justin) Defreitas of Bartonville, and Matthew (Erin Glasnovich) Smith of Galesburg, two grandchildren, Cecilia and Charlotte, her mother Theresa “Jane” Anselmo, one sister Betsy (Bill) Stahler, and nieces and nephews. Ellen graduated from Coal City High School in 1977 as Salutatorian. She was active in several school activities, and especially enjoyed playing the baritone saxophone in marching band. Ellen attended the University of Illinois to become an educator and met her husband, Michael Wayne Smith. They were married on August 17th, 1985. The two began a farming operation in Young Hickory Township and a family, Matthew David & Sarah Jane. Ellen loved spending her days raising chickens & cattle, attending her children’s many extracurricular activities, cattle shows, and substitute teaching at Spoon River Valley school district. She would spend several years working as an agriculture educator through the Fulton County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom program all across west central Illinois. Summer nights were often spent cheering for the Chicago Cubs on WGN radio. Most of all she was her family’s “biggest fan” as she never missed any of her children’s or grandchildren’s events. A visitation will be held at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. A funeral Mass will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton at 12:00 Noon. Burial will follow the funeral Mass at Midway Cemetery in London Mills. Following the committal service at the cemetery, a time of fellowship will be held at the United Methodist Church in London Mills. Timothy J. Wilkinson

Timothy J. Wilkinson, 63, of Canton, passed away, Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Renaissance Care Center in Canton.

He was born on July 10, 1959, in Canton, to Ronald and Ina Mae (Scott) Wilkinson. They preceded him in death along with two brothers, Ronald Jr. and Russell.

Surviving is one son Christopher (Meghan) Wilkinson of Altona Illinois, and three grandchildren, Nicole, Madison, and Kevin.

Tim worked as a welder at various manufacturing plants. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Burial will immediately follow at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Nancy K. Rook

Nancy K. Rook, 69, of Farmington, Illinois, passed away at 11:23 a.m., on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, in Farmington. She was born September 13, 1953, in Peoria, to Benjamin and Helen (Potts) Elliott.

She is survived by four children, David (Donna Dombrowski) Lehman of Texas, Helen Lehman Hutchins of Texas, Robert Rook of Farmington, and Dennis (Jennifer) Rook of Farmington; one brother Steve Elliott; one sister, Mary Boord; four grandchildren, Viola, Tiffany, Kaitlyn, and Koby; and three great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kallahan, and Owen.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Jerry Kizer.

Nancy worked as an Assembler at LR Nelson for 22 years.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Ethel Hamlet

Ethel Hamlet, 85, of Havana passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Havana Healthcare Center in Havana. She was born on February 6, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois to Verden V. and Ruth K. (Kreiling) Bortell. She married James H. Hamlet in 1967 and he preceded her in death in 2018.

Ethel is survived by her children, Gary Gooch of Havana, Brenda (Randy) Young of Tennessee, and Jim (Brandy) Hamlet of Havana; step-children, Steve (Deb) Cagle, Jennie (Erin) Youell, Mary Hamlet, and Roger (Jenny) Hamlet; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brothers, Eldon Bortell of Forest City and Carlos V. Bortell of Manito. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Virgil Bortell, Sr., and step-son, Jerry Hamlet.
Ethel was a graduate of Forman High School. She worked in Lincoln for the State of Illinois for many years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and visiting with family.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Maas-Hurley Funeral Home in Manito. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Lynn Cemetery in Gainesboro, Tennessee.

Raymond D. Hilton

Raymond D Hilton 82 of Energy, IL formerly of Canton passed away Saturday April 22, 2023 at his residence.


Raymond was born April 6, 1941 at home in Cuba, IL, the son of Harley O. Hilton and Grace M. (Kisler) Hilton. He married Judith C. Evans on December 10, 1960 in Mediapolis, IA. Raymond is survived by his wife Judith of Energy, two daughters Lori (Roy) Reinhold of Carterville, IL, Tammy (Russell) Castagnoli of Maricopa, AZ. Six grandchildren, Kristen Gray of Herrin, IL , Lyndsay Grove of Herrin, IL, Zachary Chapman of Arizona, Taylor Sisk of Canton, IL, Alexandra Sisk of Farmington, UT; Madisyn (Sisk) Brandon White of Seven Springs, NC. Three Great Grandchildren, Joselyn Gray of Japan, Jace and Jaxon Gray of Herrin, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and nine brothers.


He was born and raised on the family farm and attended Canton High School, Canton, IL. Raymond retired from Freeman United Coal Company at Buckheart Coal Mine Canton, IL, and also Crown Three Coal Mine at Farmersville, IL. He worked construction for Vernon Garretts Construction Company of Canton, IL, and AEH Construction of Galesburg, IL. Raymond was a member of the UMWA of America, Laborers Local 231 Pekin, IL; and the Canton Moose. Raymond loved feeding the birds, squirrels and deer that frequented his yard. He loved animals. He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan, and loved to play cards, dominos, go bowling, old automobiles, auto auctions, listening to music, the Grand Old Opry, and TV music shows. He never met a stranger. Ray was a people magnet. He would talk to anyone. People were drawn to him. He was well known for his work ethic, kindness, his Practical Jokes, and Orneriness. Raymond liked to keep busy. He went above and beyond to help family and neighbors in need. He helped deliver food with the local food pantry and loved spending time with his family and friends.


Cremation has been accorded. A visitation will be held Tuesday May 2, 2023, from 5-7 pm at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown. Charles William Roberts

It is with great sadness that the family of Charles William Roberts, 86, of Canton, and formerly of Bryant, announce that he passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Graham Hospital in Canton.


Charles was born on March 13, 1937 to William and Murlea (Carter) Roberts on a farm south of Bryant. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew, James G. Brecher, and one niece, Tara B. Brecher, both of Phoenix, AZ. Charles is survived by his former wife, Betty Roberts of Bryant and their two children, Denise (Larry) Grzanich of Canton and Kevin (Nancy) Roberts of Bryant; five grandchildren, John (Matt Ferguson) Colglazier of Jeffersonville, NY, Mindy (Ty) Lockhart of Bend, OR, Aimee Roberts of Macomb, IL, Jennifer (Isaac) Teel of Pekin, IL, Kaitlin Roberts of St. Cloud, MN; one sister, Martha Arnold of Cave Creek, AZ; and one niece, Alisa (Steve) Oujiri of Cave Creek, AZ. For the past ten years, Charles enjoyed spending time with his very special friend, Cleo Olmstead.


Charles was a man of deep faith and worshiped at the Bryant United Methodist Church and then the Wesley United Methodist Church.


Charles grew up working on the family farm. He graduated Canton High School in 1955 and attended the University of IL in Champaign and Western IL University in Macomb. He joined the US Army Reserve in 1959 and received an Honorable discharge on December 9, 1964. He continued to work on the family farm raising his family. Charles was a very resilient man surviving several serious accidents. He was quick to say his faith, family, and friends helped him through his pain and discomfort and kept him going. Charles loved shooting guns, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed sharing his garden produce with others. Many people knew him as The Tomato Man.

Robert Kenney

Robert E. Kenney, 61, of Canton, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at his residence.

He was born on April 21, 1962 in Tremont, IL to Orville and Delora (Hutton) Kenney.

He is survived by his mother Delora Skillman of Canton, three sons, Tyson of Canton, Christopher of TN, Michael of TN, one brother, three sisters and four grandchildren, Kirsten Price, Domanyc Simpson, Willow Seward and Kristal Price.

Robert had a love of music. He played the drums for many years and had recently begun to pick up the guitar. He enjoyed playing pool, especially with his son Tyson.

Bradley A. Woll

Bradley Arnold Woll, 61. Of San Jose, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.

He was born, February 23, 1961 in Lincoln, IL to the late Jeane and Rachel Radermaker Woll. He married Audrey Woll on March 21, 2000 in Las Vegas, she survives.
Brad was a Veteran of the US Army. He graduated from San Jose High School and worked as a candy maker for Nestle Corporation.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Woll, a stepdaughter, Erica Craigmiles, of Pekin, a stepson, Joshua (Corline) Craigmiles, of Middletown, five step grandchildren, a sister, Peggy (Grant) Golden, of Pekin, and two brothers, Dennis Woll, of Green Valley and Bruce (Val) Woll, of Pekin.
In addition to his parents, Brad was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Bonita “Bunny” Woll.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 28, 2023, from 10:30 to 12:00 pm followed by a funeral service at the San Jose United Methodist Church, in San Jose. A burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Patricia A. Kruzan

Patricia A. Kruzan, 80, of Canton, IL, passed away at 6:35 PM on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL. She was born on January 7, 1943 in Canton, IL to Ernest and Grace (Bandy) Palmer. She married James G. Kruzan on September 25, 1960 in Canton, IL He preceded her in death on January 30, 2022.


She is also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Sharon Ferris and Arlene Grisolano.


Patricia is survived by three children, Laone (Dennis) Yerbic of Canton, Darrell Kruzan of Canton, and Tina (Brian) Lehnhausen; five grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) Yerbic, Andy (Jayme) Yerbic, Jesse (Jessica) Lehnhausen, Jason (Lydia) Lehnhausen, and Chelsea (Brett Oldfield) Lehnhausen; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Hope Lehnhausen; several nieces and nephews; and a special thank you for caring for mom and dad to Tina Whitney-Parrish.


She was a past member of the Canton Moose Lodge and Canton Rebekah Lodge. She loved spending time with her family and playing bingo.


Graveside service will be held for both Patricia and James Kruzan at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, IL. Chaplin Carolyn Roper will officiate. Doris I. Hutton

Doris I. Hutton, 90, of Canton, passed away, Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Sunset Manor in Canton.

She was born on April 3, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, to Fred and Maude (MacDonald) Ekstrand. They preceded her in death along with one son Steve Hutton, and one brother, David Ekstrand.

Doris married Morton Hutton on June 21, 1959 they shared 45 years of marriage. He preceded her in death in 2004.

She is survived by one daughter, Sarah “Sally” (Bruce) Hebb, and one grandson, Zachary Hebb.

Doris graduated from Boone High School in 1951. She later attended Cottey College and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Iowa Wesleyan in 1956. Doris went on to become a school teacher in Galesburg for 2 years and then moved to Canton Ingersoll Middle School where she taught 7th grade language arts, English class for 32 years. She retired in 1991. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, Pi Beta PHI Fraternity, and BZ PEO sisterhood for 70 years.

She enjoyed playing bridge and was in many tournaments. She enjoyed canning and was well known for her dill pickles and spaghetti sauce. She loved her dogs and at one point she had six in her home. Most of all she loved visiting and spending time with her family and friends, nobody was ever not welcome in her home.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at Assembly of God Church in Canton.

Lewis "Pete" Gilbert Calicotte

Mapleton-Lewis "Pete" Gilbert Calicotte, 87, of Mapleton, passed away at 3:55 PM on Thursday April 20, 2023 at his residence. He was born on July 6, 1935 in Hannibal, Missouri, a son of Louie and Lillian (Edie) Calicotte. He married the love of his life, Ramona Greenley on April 2, 1968 in Hannibal, Missouri. She survives.


Also surviving is one son, Chuck (Teresa) Calicotte of Mapleton; two granddaughters, Jessica (Blake) Evans of Washington, Jennifer Calicotte of Bartonville, and one great-grandson, Hunter Evans.


Pete was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Betty.


He worked and retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers, he was of the Lutheran faith, and a member of the Masonic Lodge #188 in Hannibal, Missouri. Pete enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and being a #1 fan. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.


Per Pete's wishes, there will be no services, cremation rites will be accorded through Endsley-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Bartonville. A celebration of life gathering will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Calicotte Inc., 4401 Constitution Drive, Bartonville, Illinois 61607, where military honors will be conducted by the United States Army. Tony Ault

Tony Andrew Ault, 52, of Fairview, passed away, Saturday, April 22, 2023, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born on December 23, 1970 in Portland Oregon.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy (Greenhalgh) Ault and his father Albert Ault, two children, two brothers, Jason (Heather) Ault of Silverton OR, Gregrey (Andrea) Ault of Mollala OR, two sisters, Janne (Andrew) Casler of Clackamas OR, and Laura (Robert) Service of Goldendale WA.

Tony was an over the road truck driver for many years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and hunting.

Tony gave the “Gift of Life” by being an organ donor.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. There will be no services.

Richard "Dick" Huff

Richard “Dick” Huff, 87, of Canton, passed away, April 20, 2023, at Graham Hospital in Canton. He was born on March 2, 1936, in Macomb to Ralph and Mildred (Ross) Huff. They preceded him in death along with one brother Frank. Dick is survived by Martha (Simpson) Huff, whom he married on June 17, 1956 in Canton. Also surviving are two children, Randol (Diana) Huff of Lewistown, Rebecca (Scott) Reffett of Johns Creek Georgia, six grandchildren, Rylan, Dr. Ross, and Rhiana Huff, and Nick (Alyssa), Jake and Grant Reffett, and one great granddaughter, Charlotte Reffett. Dick owned and operated Huff Real Estate in Canton for over 50 years. He later retired from Maloof Reality in Canton. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, previously Canton Country Club, and Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club. He also was a member of Ducks Unlimited, where he was very involved with starting the local chapter. Dick enjoyed golfing, waterfowl hunting, all of his hunting dogs, and taking his grandchildren fishing. Most of all Dick loved being outdoors in nature where he enjoyed seeing wildlife, especially owls, and oak, sycamore, and buckeye trees. Throughout his childhood and adult life he enjoyed spending time around in Big Creek Park in Canton. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley united Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Robert E. Keeran

Robert E. Keeran, 81, of Canton, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born on November 18, 1941 in Beardstown to Elden and Margaret (Roberts) Keeran.

He married Karen Hoover on April 28, 1973 in Long Beach, CA. She survives along with two children, Edward (Angie) Keeran of Canton, Kari Keeran of Canton, three grandchildren, Tyler, Austin and Addison Keeran.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy and later worked for Corporate Clean at Spoon River College. He was active in the Boy Scouts, P & O Band Club and was known for his set building skills for the Canton High School plays.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023, from 5-7 pm at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton. A funeral service will follow on Tuesday, at 11am at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Frederick Ambrose Walker


Canton- Frederick Ambrose Walker, 77, of Canton, passed away at 7:53 PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL. He was born on March 2, 1946, a son of Lester and Freida (Chewning) Walker. He married Alice Neville in 1971, she survives.


Also surviving Frederick is his son, Lloyd “Bunkie” (Lisa Nuttall) Walker of Dunfermline; two grandchildren, Dakotah Walker and Breitanya Laux; 5 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sister, Christal Walker.


Preceding him in death were both parents; one brother; and one sister.


Frederick worked as an architect. He was a member of many activities and groups; such as St Mary’s Catholic church, The Illinois State Rifle Association, The Studebaker Driver’s Club, Inc., and a life member of the American Motorcyclist Association. Riding motorcycles and hunting were two of his favorite things to do in his free time.


Funeral Mass for Frederick will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton, IL. Monsignor Timothy Nolan will officiate. Michael W. "Rooster" Massingale

Michael “Rooster” Massingale, 57, of Cuba, passed away at 7:03 pm, Thursday, April 13, 2023 peacefully at home. He was born on October 21, 1965 in Canton to Lyle “Blackie” and Ruth (Williams) Massingale.

Surviving is his mother of Canton, brother Joseph Massingale of Canton, four nieces; Lily (Massingale) Scalf of Lewistown, Loran Massingale of Lewistown, Taylor Massingale of Pekin and Brook (Massingale) Mason of Lewistown and one nephew Travis Newton of Aiden.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Rooster was an avid outdoorsman and loved everything to do with nature. He enjoyed feeding his fish, dog, cats, deer, geese and anything that wandered onto his property.

Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton are in charge of arrangements.

William "Bill" Nowlin

“Bill” Nowlin, beloved husband, father, and grandfather died Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at O.S.F Hospital in Peoria. He was 82 years old.


He was born on May 22, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, and adopted by parents Rev. Ray S. and Cheryl (Babcook) Nowlin who preceded him in death.

His favorite childhood memories were of fishing with his grandpa and his dad. He graduated from Clinton High School and went on to attend Greenville College and Western Illinois University. Due to a medical condition he was exempt from serving in the military.

In 1963, he married the love of his life Teresa, who survives. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this July. They had two daughters, Lori (Bill) Canada, and Wendy VonBoeckman both of Manito. Bill’s pride and joy were his 3 grandsons, Bo and Alex Canada, and Brandon VonBoeckman, all of Manito.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jacqueline Rebman of Rushville, IL and brother-in-law Tim (Linda) Pazara of Channahon,IL.

Bill first worked as a cottage parent in the boy’s unit of the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors home in Normal, IL. Bill later worked as a part time Deputy and Communication officer in the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department while also starting work with Caterpillar Inc. Bill retired from Caterpillar after 35 years most recently working as an Operations Consultant/ Technical Analyst
in the Equipment and Attachments Division.

Bill’s favorite pastimes were various. He enjoyed fishing at Springlake, listening to music, doing yard work, and spending time with his family. His real passion was being an amateur (ham) radio operator. He developed an interest in amateur radios and received his first amateur radio license at age 16. He was proud of the fact that he was able to make amateur radio contact with every country in the world as per confirmation by the DX Century Club. He also used his radio communication skills to assist with local Emergency Services and Disaster Agencies. He remained an active member in E.S.D.A for 45 years, 5 of those as Director in Tazewell County, during which time he was instrumental in securing the purchase of a mobile Unified Command Post vehicle based in Tazewell county and serving 5 other counties. In cooperation with F.E.M.A. Bill as well as others volunteered to travel to New Orleans for several weeks after Hurricane Katrina to provide the vehicle and their services for communication needs.

Bill died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. As per his request, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be a private family memorial service at a later date.
