James Jeffery Atkinson, 60, of Peoria, passed away at 11:17 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. He was born on November 8, 1965 in Canton, IL to William Edward Atkinson and Wilma Jean (Barnwell) Boughman.
He is survived by his mother; one brother, William Dwayne Atkinson; one sister, Terri Atkinson. James helped raise one niece, Atoi (Kanuri) Cunningham and one nephew, Amon (Mayra) Shelby. He is also survived by 2 nephews, William Dwayne Hergert and Jeffery Lee Hergert; one niece, Andrea Jordan Barclay; and four great nieces; Amia and Kyla Cunningham, Mila and Luna Shelby and his dog, Marley.
He is preceded in death by his father.
James was known in Farmington, IL as “Jimi down the street”. He was always the life of the party. He loved his 67’ Ford Galaxies. He last worked at Trouble Free Plumbing. James lived most of his life with artificial heart valves. The family would like to thank 3 special doctors throughout his life, Dr Dale Geiss, Dr. Albers and Dr. Coleman.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Friday, September 18, 2026 at Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington, IL. Service will be held the same day at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Kanuri Cunningham will officiate. Burial will follow service at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington, IL. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Family.
