Raelene Evelyn Mercer, 87, of Canton, passed away at 3:00 PM on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Courtyard Estates of Farmington. She was born on May 17, 1933 in Brereton, IL to Frank E. and Nellie (Johnson) Tink. She married Frederick Olen Mercer on July 27, 1952 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton. He preceded her in death.
Raelene was also preceded in death by her parents and one son, Roderick Mercer.
Surviving is two children, Steven Mercer of Manchester, IA and Martha Mercer of Canton, IL; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Lewis) Kling, Steven (Amanda) Hunt, Gabriel (Denise) Love, Jearim (Sybil) Love, Sara Love, Benjamin (Hannah) Mercer, and John “Jay” Mercer; and twenty great-grandchildren.
Raelene worked as a medical transcriber and also as a newspaper editor. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, a 50 plus year member of P.E.O. Chapter LY, the Altruistic Club of Canton and several Bridge Clubs.
Raelene was an avid weather watcher, especially the weather channel and also loved to watch and feed the birds in her yard, especially cardinals and hummingbirds. She was an extreme homemaker with everything always in its place. Raelene was known for her baked goods, especially her Christmas goody platters. She also encouraged many cooks to “Do it right.” Raelene could sit and visit with anyone on a variety of sports, especially “Fred’s Team” the Green Bay Packers. She loved to garden and play cards, especially bridge with her long-time friends. Most of all, she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was truly her world.
Memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL with a visitation an hour prior. Rev. Leanne Noland will officiate. Burial of ashes will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, IL. Memorials can be made to Meals on Wheels in Canton, IL.
