John Daniel “Dan” Walter




















Canton – John Daniel “Dan” Walter, 87, passed away at 8:13 AM on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Sunset Nursing Home. He was born on April 9, 1933 in Columbia, MO to Russell and Verne Virginia (Oesterhaus) Walter. He married Elizabeth Jane Gaskill on July 3, 1966 in Canton, IL, she survives.

 Also surviving are three children, Kevin (Tania) Walter of Danvers, IL, Brian Walter of Janesville, WI, and Adam Walter of Springfield, IL and two granddaughters, Hope and Noelle.

 Dan was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

 Dan received his bachelor’s degree in horticulture/floriculture from the University of Illinois. From 1957 to 1993 he worked at and then ran the family business, Walter’s Flowers in Canton, IL. In 1989, he began working at the Illinois River Correctional Center as the instructor of Horticulture, he retired in 2008. He enjoyed traveling with his family, watching classic movies, antique cars, astronomy, and was an avid gardener his whole life.

 Dan was a U.S. Air Force veteran; he was on active duty as a 2nd lieutenant from October 1955 to October 1957 and then in the reserves as a Captain from 1957 to 1967. He also served as president of the Canton Rotary Club in 1978.

 Due to COVID-19 private graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, IL. Pastor Frank Zimmerman will officiate. Memorials can be made to the Spoon River Garden Club.
