Nancy Marie Tounzen

Nancy Marie Tounzen, 97, of Pekin, formerly of Manito, passed away at Pekin Manor at 2:36 a.m., on Monday, April 21, 2025. She was born December 14, 1927, in Morganton, Arkansas, to Robert and Susan (Neal) Tomlinson. She married Louis M. Tounzen on December 29, 1947, in Heber Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1994.

Mrs. Tounzen is survived by two children: Sharon Kay (Glen) Heflin, of Hopedale, Illinois, and Janice (Sam) Dunn, of Raywood, Texas; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter: Susan (Jerry) Baker, three siblings: Christine Maher, Frances Ingold, and Eldred Tomlinson, as well as one granddaughter: Tammy Welch.

Mrs. Tounzen was a member of Manito First Baptist Church. She had been a member of the Eastern Star and was a retired beautician.

Graveside services will be held at Meadowlawn Cemetery, in Manito, on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Larry Sauter will officiate.

Elizabeth L. Broadfield

Elizabeth L. Broadfield, 92, of Yates City, passed away at 4:05 a.m., on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Elizabeth was born October 22, 1932, in Farmington, to John Andrew Sr. and Elizabeth Ann (Boldys) Lacey. Elizabeth married Dale Broadfield Sr. on July 21, 1956, in Galesburg and later on May 8, 2007, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Farmington. Dale preceded her in death on November 4, 2015.

Elizabeth is survived by two children, Denise Slater of Bartonville, and Dale Broadfield, Jr. of Yates City; one sister, Mary Joan (the late William) Rogers; two grandchildren, Allison (Sam) Babitsky and Kyle Slater; and two great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, John Lacey Jr. and George Lacey Sr.

Elizabeth graduated from St. Francis College of Nursing in 1953. She then worked nights at St. Francis Hospital and later for Dr. Lee Hammond in Elmwood. Elizabeth was an active member at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Farmington and their Altar and Rosary Society before the church closed in 2024. She loved to make fudge and pies for the church bizarre. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1571 in Farmington. Elizabeth enjoyed gardening, helping on their family farm, canning, and freezing homegrown vegetables.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Elmwood. A visitation will be held the same day prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Cremation rites will then be accorded and burial of her ashes will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington at a later date.

Raymond Edward Maritano Jr.

Raymond Edward Maritano Jr., 53, of Elmwood, passed away at 8:22 PM on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at his residence. He was born on June 3, 1971 in Peoria, IL, to Raymond Victor Maritano Sr. and Mary (Keith) Miller. He married Kristi Parker on September 22, 2010. She survives.

He is also survived by his mother; 8 children, Lilliana, Ashley, Kyra, Malia, Brina, Tieler, Riley, and Drake; one step-son, Nick; 15 grandchildren, one brother, Mark Miller; three sisters, Sara Amato, Theresa Miller, and Tasha Bishop.

He is preceded in death by his father, one daughter, Mckennah; and his grandma, Lillian Lolita.

Raymond was a talented song writer and musician. He enjoyed Harley’s and classic cars. He loved his family and children. He was also known to be loved by all that knew him.

Doris Irene Schmeilski

Doris Irene Schmeilski, 95, of Trivoli, passed away at 9:22 PM on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Accolade Healthcare in Peoria, IL. She was born on September 11, 1929 in Peoria, IL, to Lawrence and Mary (Bishop) Marshall. She married William G. Schmeilski on December 31, 1947. He preceded her in death on November 18, 1999.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard Kerkhove; and one sister, Shirley Lauer.

She is survived by four daughters, Carol Berry of Hanna City, IL, Patricia Koehler of Glasford, IL, Vickie Schmeilski of Peoria, IL, and Wendy Schmeilski of Bellevue, IL; 8 grandchildren, Kevin, Karen, Joseph, David, Michelle, Leon, Anthony, and Lisa; 11 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gary Kerkhove.

Doris loved spending time with her family and pets, doing yard work, and spending time in Florida during the winter. She also enjoyed going to eat at Gil’s Supper Club and Avanti’s.

Bernard D. Dixon

Bernard D. Dixon, age 96 of Astoria, Illinois, passed away at 8:25 pm on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at The Arc in Chillicothe, Illinois. He was born on February 26, 1929 in Bluff City, Illinois, the son of Kenneth Lyle and Fern Ida (Gould) Dixon. He married Nedra Irene Avery on January 23, 1954 in Olathe, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 1, 2011.

He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Mike) Funcannon of Cassville, Missouri and Toni (Kevin) Heathcoat of Peoria, Illinois, his son Kevin (Lori) Dixon of Chillicothe, Illinois, nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Bernard worked as a parts salesman for International Harvester. He also farmed most of his life.

He was a former member of the Hickory-Kerton Fire Department.

He enjoyed hunting, hunting mushrooms and fishing. He spent a lot of time in his garage building birdhouses.

Services for Bernard will be held on Thursday, April 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Mike Icenogle will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Bluff City Cemetery, Bluff City, Illinois. Memorials in Bernard’s memory may be given to the Hickory-Kerton Fire Department.

Carrie Lynn Wise

Carrie Lynn Wise, age 57 of Astoria, Illinois, passed away at 8:40 pm at The Elms in Macomb, Illinois. She was born December 3, 1967 in Hinsdale, Illinois, the daughter of George H. Wise and Helen (Danner) Wise.

She was a 1985 graduate of Astoria High School and then went on to take EMT training at Spoon River College. She worked as an EMT, and later became a school bus driver. Driving the school bus gave Carrie a lot of enjoyment and she loved the kids that she drove to and from school.

Carrie is survived by her mother Helen Danner Wise of Macomb, Illinois, her siblings, Marsha Wise Collette of Oakland, Oregon, Kristen (Brad) Bettencourt of Arnold, Maryland, Dan (Robin) Wise of McMinnville, Tennessee and Ed (Kathryn) Wise of Worland, Wyoming, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews .

She was preceded in death by her father George H. Wise, grandparents George G. Wise, Flossie Wise, Hart Danner and Iona Danner and several aunts and uncles.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Services will be announced at a later date. Memorials in Carrie’s memory may be given to the Astoria Fire and Rescue Squad and sent to Shawgo Memorial Home, PO Box 525, Astoria, IL 61501.

David "Squeak" Truman Gale

David “Squeak” Truman Gale, aka “Big Fish”, of Ipava, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 20th, 2025. He was born on May 27, 1951 in Macomb, IL, the son of Truman and Louise (Batterton) Gale. David married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Steele, on August 8, 1969 in Table Grove, IL. She survives.

He is also survived by one son; Christopher Gale, grandson; Trenton Gale; two sisters; Norma Weishaar and Donna (and Dave) Thome, along with a host of special nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents and brother-in-laws; Jerry Weishaar, Dean Malott and Neale Krider.

In high school David began working with local construction companies and farmers. After graduation from V.I.T. High School he worked at NTN Bowers in Macomb and International Harvester in Canton for 14 years before returning to grain and livestock farming full time.

David loved everything outdoors, boating on the Lake of the Ozarks, hunting, fishing on the Great Lakes, mud slings and tractor pulls with his son, and fast pitch softball with his brother-in-laws and cousin, Don.

There wasn’t a Sunday where you wouldn’t find David watching NASCAR or cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. You could always find a gun or fishing pole in his hand ready to go.

He was a member of the Vermont Methodist Church and the Fulton County Farm Bureau.

David will always be membered for his orneriness, his laughter, his loyalty and love for his family. Though he is gone, he is now without pain and the love he gave us remains a beautiful reminder of his presence in our lives.

A service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Mike Ulmer will be officiating. A visitation will take place from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday, April 27 before the service. Cremation rites will be accorded after the service. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Ambulance or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
