Phoebe Owens

Canton-Phoebe Owens, 88, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at Red Oak Memory Care in Canton.

She was born on September 23, 1929 in Canton to Clyde and Mary Orthalene (Brant) Myers.  They preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughters, Rebecca (Rob) Phipps of Farmington, Deborah (Dale) Shelby of Lewistown, Teresa (the late Mike) Grigsby of Canton, Kim (Jeff) Standard of Farmington. Eleven grandchildren Kenny (Sarah) Phipps, Kerri (Adam) LaSala, Kyle (Fiancée Mandy) Phipps, Adryanne (Fiancée Tanner) Phipps, Ben (Kristin) Shelby, Jeff (Emily) Shelby, Christina Grigsby, Kelly (Brad) Murphy, Erik Grigsby, Emily (Cody) Crumb, Jacob Standard, seventeen great grandchildren, brother Jack (Kay) Myers of Davenport FL and Mary (the late Aaron) Preece of Peoria.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers Clyde and John Myers, two sisters, Lida (Henry) Banko, Joan (Lloyd) Hoff and great grandchild, Magnolia LaSala.

Phoebe worked at International Harvester in Canton as secretary in her younger years.  She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and bowled in various leagues.  She enjoyed playing Bridge and was a talented seamstress and cook.

A private graveside service has been held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton

Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton has been entrusted with services.

Cynthia M. Scott

Canton- Cynthia M. Scott, 52, of Canton, formerly of Farmington, passed away at 1:12 AM on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at her residence. She was born on February 18, 1966 in Canton, a daughter of Clarence and Gloria (Anderson) Burgus. She married Terry Scott on July 13, 2018 in Lewistown. He survives.

Also surviving are her children, Amanda (Jacob Shultz) Wheeler of London Mills; Joey (Crystal) Dilts of Canton; Brianna Dilts of London Mills, and three grandchildren, Aiden, Jocelynn, and Jayce.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Gloria Balagna, and one brother, Mike Burgus.

She worked for Farmington Country Manor in the Housekeeping Department for several years.

Per Cynthia’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington. Stephanie Girard

Canton-Stephanie Opie-Girard, 39, formerly of Texas, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 in Canton.

She was born on June 28, 1979 in Italy to Donald and Maryellen (Squires) Opie.

She married Justin Girard on August 2, 105 in Houston Texas.  He survives.

Also surviving are her parents, Donald Opie of Texas and Maryellen Bunn also of Texas, two sisters Melanie West of LA, Jennifer Alderman of Texas, half-brother James Opie of Texas and half-sister Aimee Maurer of OH.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Barbara Harris

Canton- Barbara L. Harris, 96, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at Red Oak Memory Care in Canton.

She was born on November 23, 1921 in Galesburg to Herbert and Ruth (Diehl) Fleming.  They preceded her in death.

She married Warren Harris on December 28, 1950 in Ipava.  He survives.

Also surviving are two children, Debbie (Kevin) Stephenson of Canton, Mark and (Nikki) Harris of Carlinville, three grandchildren, Courtney (Peter Ward) Harris of San Francisco, CA, Scott (Fiancée-Kimmy Borgini) Harris of Carlinville and Shane Harris of Denver, CO.

Barbara graduated from Monmouth College with a degree in teaching and became a 4th grade teacher working for Canton District #66 retiring in 1985.  Sha was also active in the Canton Community Concert Series.

She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Canton.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at 10 am, at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Canton with a funeral service to follow at 11 am at the church.

Cremation rites have been accorded and the burial of the ashes will be held at Shields Chapel at a later date.

Robert Detrick

Robert Detrick, age 82 of Lewistown, IL, passed away at 7:30 am Saturday, September 1, 2018 at his home. He was born on August 1, 1936 in Quincy, IL, the son of C.P. and Carrie Mae (Lawson) Detrick. He married Marilyn Black on March 1, 1961 in Lewistown, She survives.

Also surviving are two sons; Daniel (and Julie) Detrick of Huntsville, Alabama and Will Detrick of Davenport, Iowa, four grandchildren, Aaron, Samuel, Maggie, and Wyatt Detrick, and his sister, Virginia Crase of Manito, Illinois.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Steven Detrick.

Bob taught social studies at East Peoria and Pekin before being called to the military. Throughout his career in the military and educational field, Bob was school principle at Manito, school administrator at Easton, and taught social studies at Illini Central Schools. He also taught the Chinese language under a fellowship program at Washington University in St. Louis.

Bob entered the United States Air Force. He attended college at WIU in Macomb, IL, before being called back to the military to attend flight school. He was also sent to signal school, where he learned the Chinese language. He was most proud of the medal received from General Lai Ming-Tang, Chief of the General Staff, Ministry of National Defense, Republic of China.

He was a life member of the Havana VFW Post #6408. He was a 50 year member of the Manito Masonic Lodge #476 AF & AM, the Order of the Eastern Star of Pekin, IL, the Peoria, IL Consistory Masonic Temple, and AFIFI Shriners of Tacoma, WA.

Bob enjoyed camping, fishing, taking walks and target practice. He took piano lessons as an adult and even participated in several recitals. He enjoyed owning two 1934 Fords during his lifetime.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Lewistown, IL. Pastor Kathy Barrett will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 5-7 pm at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria and on Saturday, one hour prior to the services at the church. Masonic services will be held on Friday evening at 7:00 pm at the funeral home, provided by the Vermont Masonic Lodge. Interment will be in the Apple Cemetery in Lewistown with full military rites. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, the Easton United Methodist Church, or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Marilyn J. Rupe

Canton – Marilyn J. Rupe, 79, of Canton passed away at 3:25 pm, Saturday, September 1, 2018 at her residence.  She was born on March 17, 1939 in Canton to Bramley “Boo” and Esther (Peterson) Whitehead.  She married Ronald Rupe on April 19, 1957 in Canton.  He survives along with four children; Deborah (Rory) Green of Goodyear, AZ, Mark (Beth) Rupe of Bloomington, David Rupe of Mesa, AZ, and Rebecca (Daniel) Marcotte of Bloomington, brother Jerry (Phyllis) Whitehead of Canton, twelve grandchildren; Sarah (Aaron) Todd, Benjamin Rupe, Brandon (Morgan) Green, Christopher (Beth) Green, Andrew Marcotte, Alexis Marcotte, Jordan Rupe, Paige Rupe, Amber Rupe  and four great-granddaughters; Chloe and Emilia Todd, Riley Green, and Eve Green.  Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents.

Marilyn was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Canton. She worked as a secretary for many years, last working at Lutheran Social Services and Catholic Social Services in Canton.

Services will be 11 am Monday, September 10, 2018 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.  The Rev. Dr. Beth Rupe and Rev. Paul Albert McMaster

Paul Albert McMaster, 84, of Farmington, passed away at 6:45 AM on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Sunset Manor in Canton. He was born on July 20, 1934 in Trivoli, IL to Albert and Frieda (Walters) McMaster. He married Gloria Ryer on October 24, 1954 in Farmington, IL, she preceded him in death on February 21, 2005.

Paul was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lucille Foster.

Surviving are two children, Paula (Gerald) Fraley of Trivoli and Kenny McMaster of Farmington; three grandchildren, Jon (Kelsey) Fraley, Judson Fraley, and Morgan McMaster; and one great-grandchild, Henry Fraley.

Paul worked as a farmer and also at Peoria County FS in Hanna City. He enjoyed fishing, farming, and his cattle.
