Ralph V Froehling

Ralph Vernon Froehling, 96, of Canton, died Thursday, January 9 at the Intensive Care Unit at Graham Hospital.


Born October 5, 1928, in Harvey, the son of Arthur and Julia (Wilkenning) Froehling, he married Jean Millington on January 27, 1952 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton. She survives.


Other survivors include three sons, Alan, John and David Froehling; one daughter, Lynn (Brian) Martie; eight grandchildren, Natasha V. (Jeff) Heitman, Sonya J. (Robert) Heer, Nadia M. Froehling, Andrei R. (Jennifer) Froehling, Daniel (Shelby) Froehling, Benjamin Froehling, Scott (Lyra) Anderson and Jessica (Ryne) Wooden; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.


He was preceded in death by his brother Harold and sister Alice.


He graduated from Cissna Park High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1946 to 1948. He attended the University of Illinois with funding from the G.I. Bill.


Ralph always wanted to be a lawyer since he was young boy. He was accepted into the U of I Law School and graduated with a law degree in 1952.


He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served in the Advocate General Department of the Army.


He began his legal practice in Oak Park, then moved to Abingdon and practiced law in Galesburg. He joined the Chiperfield Law Firm in Canton in 1956. Eugene Taylor joined them as a partner in the office at the former Opera House building above the former Capitol Theatre.


Years later, a new law office was built on West Elm Street, and attorneys Ron Weber and Nancy Schell became partners there. The firm is currently named Froehling, Weber & Schell.


The Illinois Bar Association awarded him the distinction of Senior Counselor in 2002.


Ralph was an active member of the community, serving in the Kiwanis Club of Canton and Canton Rotary Club, on the board of Parlin-Ingersoll Library Board of Trustees and with other local organizations.


A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Please subscribe to his obituary for notifications of the schedule. Cremation rites have been accorded. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
