Velma “Toby” McCamey


Velma Lucille “Toby” Crawford McCamey, 94, of Canton died at the Graham Hospital in Canton on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
She was born in Canton on October 15, 1923 to Arthur N. and Nellie L. (Owings) Crawford. She married William H. McCamey on May 23, 1948 in Canton. He preceded her in death on December 18, 2009. Her son, William P. McCamey also preceded her in death on November 19, 2013. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Jody McCamey of Cuba and two granddaughters, Becky (Dan) Buchen of Peoria and Diana (Troy) Eeten of Cuba and their families; nieces, Kathryn Thompson Spillner (late Alan C.) of Cary, IL and Janet Thompson Spoden (Dr. James E.) of Sautee, GA; great-nephews, CDR Brent Spillner (Angela Thelen) and family of Kittery, ME and Kent Spillner (Ozge Catalbas) and family of North Barrington, IL; great-nieces, Elizabeth Spoden (Marc Lennon) and family of Jamestown, RI;  Erika Spoden (Justin Cowart) of Bremerton, WA; and Natalie Spoden (Nir Ben-Jacob) of Mountainside, NJ.
Toby graduated from Canton High School in 1941, and attended Peoria Institute of Business and the University of Illinois. She was employed at Graham Hospital as a medical records librarian, as well as secretary for Roy L. Patterson, MD. She also worked as a deputy tax assessor and a judge of elections for many years in precinct #12.
She was active in local civic and charitable organizations her entire life. She was a Life Member of Beta Psi Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority, joining in 1947; and over the years served as local president many times, as well as serving in other offices, including as President of Xi Province many times.  She was a past president of John Dean PTA, past president of PTA Council, and held a Life Membership in the Illinois State PTA, where she served as membership chairman on the state board. Additionally, she served as District Director of Region #20 and District #10 in the Chicago area. Toby devoted many years to the Fulton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, serving 17 years as the County Chairman and 6 years as a member of the Illinois Division Executive Board in Chicago.
Toby was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother for a number of years, and she was elected The Canton Daily Ledger “Woman of the Year” in 1979. She was a member of the Canton First Christian Church since 1938, and enjoyed teaching Sunday School there for 25 years. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors club. Toby was an active member of the Community Concert Association Board of Directors, where she served as President for over 25 years.
A visitation will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018, from 10 am until 11 am at the First Christian Church in Canton with a funeral to follow at 11 am at the church.  A funeral luncheon will follow at the church and a private burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton has been entrusted with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Canton or the American Cancer Society.
