Mabel Freeman

Mabel Lucy Freeman was born on April 19, 1925, in Prairie City, IL, the daughter of Lewis and Mabel Wiegand Mullhatten. She passed away on August 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Mabel was the beautiful age of 99.

Mabel was preceded in death by the love of her life of 54 years, Donald Dexter Freeman; son-in-law David R. Chaddock; and three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by one son, David D. Freeman (Jill) of Fairview; and one daughter, Chrystal R. Chaddock of Canton; six grandchildren: Tanya Anderson-Myers (Mike) of Canton, Heather Miller (Josh) of Danville, CA; Carrie Freeman of Peoria Heights, Jordan Pasley (Todd) of Norris, Whitney Windsor (Travis) of Cuba, and Dylan Freeman (Samantha) of Davenport, IA.

Mabel was blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren: Caden, Logan, Jacob, Sebastian, Daisy, Bentley, Faith, Ryatt, Ryker, George, Rowan, Billy and Teagan.

Mabel graduated from Augusta High School in 1943. She was employed at Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 8 years and then transferred to the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in Seattle, Washington. Mabel had a combined 36 ½ years with the telephone company and retired from AT&T in Canton.

Mabel and Donald owned Sun Valley Ranch, where they raised cattle, horses, various waterfowl, and beautiful peacocks.

She was very active in the community, including serving as past President of the Canton Woman's Club, a member of the Altrusa International Club of Canton, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton since January 1971.

Mabel was born to travel. In her 99 years, she explored this beautiful world with her daughter Chrystal, visiting Ireland, Hawaii, multiple trips to Mexico, and numerous llama shows throughout the Midwest. She was always ready to take on the next adventure.

Family meant everything to Mabel. She took pride in the meals she made for her family, holidays, birthdays, and reunions spent together—she absolutely loved that time. You couldn't beat her amazing oatmeal pie, monkey bread, peanut clusters, butter brickle, and popcorn balls—she loved her sweets!

A graveside service will be held at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 11 am. There will be no visitation.
