John William “Tex” Sunderland, 80, of Manito, passed away at his home at 7:08 a.m., on Thursday, August 15, 2024. He was born April 11, 1944, in Pekin, Illinois, to John Venna and Anna Teresa (Halpin) Sunderland. He married Jacqueline Stuan on February 28, 1970, in Manito.
Mr. Sunderland is survived by his wife, Jackie, of Manito; son, Jay (Tamie) Sunderland, of Topeka; daughter, Jennifer (Harvey) Holcomb, of Pekin; as well as two grandchildren: Duncan and Lance Holcomb. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Margaret Metz and Vanita Shepherdson.Mr. Sunderland served in the US Army from 1965 until 1967 and was a proud member of Hill Palmer American Legion Post, in Manito. He had worked at Corn Products, in Pekin, and Wisthuff Implement, in Manito. He later owned and operated an auto parts store and two gas stations. He was the current Road Commissioner for Manito Township. He enjoyed racing cars at the drag strip in Havana and working on cars with his son in their auto shop. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching baseball as well.
Visitation will be held at Maas-Hurley Funeral Home, in Manito, on Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, August 19, 2024, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Meadowlawn Cemetery, in Manito.
